Fidesz group leader proposes total ban on foreign media funding

It may be best to totally ban media financing from abroad, the Fidesz parliamentary group leader has said, adding that “the USAID scandal was the tip of the iceberg”.

Referring to “the international corruption network that has bought politicians, journalists, activists and media platforms in Hungary”, Fidesz group leader Máté Kocsis wrote on Facebook on Saturday that more and more information was coming to light concerning how foreign taxpayers’ money was used to finance those spreading “extremist liberal ideology” and carrying out “anti-government activities”.

He lambasted this as “gross interventions in Hungary’s domestic affairs”, adding that “perhaps it would be best if the media could not be financed from abroad at all” and to “make this a rule”.

  1. It’s time for Hungarians to dig deep and start paying for subscriptions to the likes of HVG, Telex and 444. I would suggest this is required irrespective of political alignment, right-thinking Fidesz supporters need to recognise the need to have voices publishing that are independent of the government, but too many are happy to live in an echo chamber and consume government propaganda without even chewing. As an aside I cannot imagine that a significant percentage of funding for any of these media organs arrived in the form of grants from overseas foundations but turning off these taps might be sufficient to bankrupt them, as making a profit from media is nigh on impossible these days, while they continue to fulfil an essential social function.

  2. Why should this be in any way controversial?!?

Media today are political activists, not reporters.

While that should be decisively addressed, it stands to reason that in the meantime there needs to be a ban on money coming into or going out of the country connected to media financing. That’s just sheer common sense.

    • I wonder if the law will apply to the foreign money Fidesz receives as well, or just the opposition…
