FINA championship open to media but MTVA has sole rights to broadcast competitive events
Hungarian public broadcaster MTVA said in a statement on Thursday that all registered media outlets will have access to the so-called mixed zone and press events of the FINA championships at the discretion of FINA, but MTVA retains exclusive rights to record and broadcast the competitive events themselves.
Government spokesman Zoltán Balog said that it is standard practice at all world sporting events for the rights-holder to sell the images recorded at the competition sites.
News site mno.hu reported earlier that several broadcasters had received letters barring them from using cameras at competition sites even when no events are under way. This would also make it impossible for them to interview contestants, mno.hu said.
At a news briefing on Thursday, government office chief János Lázár appealed for support for the event “the likes of which has not been organised in Hungary for at least a century”.
