You only talk to two characters during the course of the main story. But Godfall doesn’t need a story to work either, because it thrives on the intensive combat system and the constant rain of prey. In contrast to Destiny or Borderlands, for example, which dominate the looter genre, in Godfall the fights take place exclusively with melee weapons. The combat system is very reminiscent of that of God of War with an extremely close camera and powerful, easy-to-learn combos. Your own style of play changes depending on the weapon you have equipped: With huge war hammers you tend to be sluggish, but deal properly with each blow. With double blades on the other hand, you are very agile but you have to land more hits in order to cause the same damage to the enemy.

The weapons are the key

In addition to loot in the form of weapons and equipment, you also get materials that you need to forge new combat suits. They serve as a kind of class or role in combat in the game. For example, a suit deals more fire damage and has the ability to set all enemies in the vicinity on fire. Another summons three warriors to support you in battle. Apart from the passive bonuses and the attraction skills, these only differ visually. There is no typical class that dictates the style of play, such as an assassin, tank, or mage. The style of play depends solely on the weapon chosen, and the suit bonuses only become effective in the endgame, when every percentage point counts more damage.

New technology – new level of gaming?

A big subject with the next-gen consoles is the loading time which should disappear, so the fact that Godfall was developed for SSD optimization is noticeable. It only takes a few seconds from the start of the game to the first fights. But this fact won’t motivate gamers around the world to buy the new title. All in all you can say that the worlds are fantastically beautiful, even if they have as little personality as everything else.  The enemy formations work well, there are even a few side missions with little puzzles. It’s all cute, but in the end you may still wonder what kind of game it is? Either it is or they were completely successful with the premise of designing a competent, graphically high-quality game without any recognizable character. Godfall is definitely worth playing if you are not looking for a complex and great story game.
