Here is the ranking of workplaces in Hungary; from businessmen to porn stars
It is not often that hospital directors and bank governors are mentioned alongside prostitutes, drug dealers, and porn stars. But today, this is exactly what had happened, thanks to the list of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) about the prestige of Hungarian workplaces.
Among other things, during its mini-census in 2016, HCSO examined the assessment, or in other words, the prestige, of the professions in Hungary. The results are here, and things look interesting – Napi.hu wrote.
It must be mentioned that it is not easy to measure the prestige of professions, as the analysis itself emphasises it. The literature also debates the objectivity of such examinations in contrast to analysing workplaces by wage or by production.

What were the criteria?
When compiling the ranking of jobs, the following five were the main criteria they considered.
- How much do people working in the field earn?
- Does it provide influence or authority?
- How much does it take to study in order to work in the field?
- How beneficial is it for society?
- How appealing or fashionable is it nowadays?
The Ranking
People could grade the professions between 1 and 15 points. The higher the point, the less the prestige assigned to the profession is. It is evident from the results that, according to Hungarians, the profession of hospital directors is the most prestigious. University rectors finished second, and surgeons finished last on the podium with third place.
Among the top 50, there are professions such as dentist, mechanical and chemical engineer, architect, mathematician, programmer, notary, economist and firefighter marshal.
The bottom of the ranking
Prostitutes, drug dealers, and porn stars are among the least prestigious professions according to Hungarians.
Where are the politicians then?
According to preliminary approximations, they expected it to be among the most prestigious professions, but, as it turns out, the profession of politicians is not in the top 10.
Although they did not finish among the top professions, they definitely placed in the top third of the 173 examined professions. Diplomats, for example, came in 15th, European parliamentary representatives were placed 24th, government secretaries 25th and members of parliament finished in 33rd place.

What is the craze right now?
Although the list was compiled based on five different criteria, if we only considered which one was the most fashionable, then plastic surgeons, television anchor-men, lawyers and marketing managers would finish among the top. However, according to Hungarians, some other professions can also fall in the most fashionable category; programmers, dentists and bank governors, for example. It is not surprising, though, that the least prestigious professions are also not very fashionable, according to Hungarians. The least fashionable of them are the following: prostitutes, garbage collectors, utility workers, and street cleaners.
