Hungarian International Airport closes urgently due to runway damage – UPDATE
This week is far from over, but it will surely not be Debrecen’s best one concerning air traffic. Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air announced that they would shut their base from October. Yesterday evening, the airport sent Daily News Hungary a statement informing the press that they had to close due to runway damage.
Hungarian international airport closed yesterday
According to the statement of the Debrecen International Airport, their employees found the damage on one of the airport’s runways during a routine check. The reason is the high temperature lasting for too long. As a result, considering the highest flight security rules, they had to close the airport for traffic until they could finish the reconstruction.
If the weather allows it, the work will only last a week, during which the airport will remain closed. The airport informed all the partner airlines (with charter or scheduled flights) to pass the information to their passengers and make the necessary decisions.
Two flights redirected to Budapest
They asked all passengers travelling from or to Debrecen to establish connections with their travel agencies and airlines to receive proper updates about their flights. They added they would do everything they could to finish the reconstruction work.
According to dehir.hu, a local news outlet, a flight from Eindhoven to Debrecen landed at Budapest Airport yesterday evening. Based on the report of a passenger, another flight from Istanbul was also redirected to the Hungarian capital.
