Hungarian mobile operator shuts down tonight, here is what customers should do

From tomorrow, the Hungarian mobile infrastructure segment will once again become a triple player. From midnight onwards, the base stations of the DIGIMobil service will be shut down. This means that the three remaining mobile service providers will be Yettel, Vodafone and Telekom.

According to HWSW, the service launched 4 years ago has not lived up to expectations. The service will be taken over by Vodafone Hungary, which has been part of the same group as Digi since the end of January.

DIGIMobil services are shutting down tonight

The closure of DIGIMobil will affect around 2,500 locations in Hungary. According to the company’s earlier announcement, these will be reorganised into a new company, which will be sold by 4iG, together with the frequency usage rights.

According to HWSW, last year, speculation that one of the big three mobile companies would eventually become a Hungarian majority owner was confirmed. Although, contrary to expectations, it was not Telenor/Yettel Hungary, but Vodafone Hungary.

What to do?

DIGIMobil and DIGINet Aktív 50 customers will also use the Vodafone network with almost nationwide coverage from 1 June 2023. Although the sim cards will not need to be replaced, customers will have some work to do, according to a company statement.

DIGI’s mobile services are backed by Vodafone Hungary’s nationwide network. With the switch, the VoLTE service providing HD quality voice calls will remain available, but the VoWiFi (over WiFi networks) complementary service will be discontinued, Portfolio reports. The change does not affect roaming conditions.

You do not need to change your SIM card to connect to the new mobile network. Phones with DIGIMobil cards will be connected to Vodafone’s 2G or 4G mobile network from 1 June, depending on the type. While most phone types will be automatically connected to the new network, in some cases manual network selection may be required.

To use the mobile internet, you also need to activate the data roaming option, which – contrary to the warning of the devices – does not cost users more than the package charge on domestic networks.
