Hungary, despite being a small country, boasts a number of unmissable tourist attractions. Whether you visit Budapest or wander the countryside, your eyes and mind are in for a treat. In this article, we are listing the most beloved Hungarian tourist attractions that you must not miss.
Tourist attractions in Budapest
Let us start with the mesmerising capital city, Budapest. No matter where you look or where your feet take you in the city, you will eventually encounter a crowd-pleaser. One of them is definitely the Parliament which is one of Budapest’s (and the country’s) most well-known public buildings. The neo-Gothic establishment overlooks the mighty Danube, sitting on the eastern bank of the river.

Next up is the Buda Castle. It is truly a tourist favourite, as you can find both Hungarian and foreign people on the site at all times. It is also a famous wedding venue: what could be more memorable than getting your wedding photos taken above Budapest? You also shouldn’t miss the Fisherman’s Bastion when visiting the Buda Castle:
If you would love to wander into the city a bit more, try Heroes’ Square. The square is known for its iconic Millennium Monument with statues featuring the Seven chieftains of the Magyars and other important Hungarian national leaders, as well as the Memorial Stone of Heroes. It is a huge square so you will definitely not walk past it:
Are you keen on music? Then you would, without a doubt, be keen on the Hungarian State Opera House. It is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company that specialises in operas and ballets. Speaking of arts, the next tourist attraction you want to visit is the Hungarian National Museum. It is the national museum for the history, art, and archaeology of Hungary. The museum also exhibits pieces of art made in areas not within Hungary’s modern borders, such as Transylvania.
Tourist attractions in the countryside
We should not forget that there is so much more to Hungary than just its capital city (even though Budapest alone offers everything we could ever ask for), and that cities like Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, GyÅ‘r and NyÃregyháza deserve recognition too. If you’re in Debrecen, look for the Nagyerdei Park, the Great Church, the Déri Museum, and the zoo. Visit Szeged for the Fire Tower, the Dóm Square, the Synagogue, and the Botanical Garden of the University of Szeged.
Give a shot to the Pécs Cathedral, the Zsolnay Museum, the Széchenyi Square and the National Theatre of Pécs. In GyÅ‘r, the Old Town area, the Benedictine Church, the Town Hall, and the Bishop Lookout Tower are waiting for you. GyÅ‘r is so close to the border with Austria that from there, you can take a small detour (but don’t forget to come back!). Lastly, in NyÃregyháza, the Sóstó Zoo (where animals are actually very interactive with you), the Sóstó Museum Village, the Aquarius Spa and Wellness Centre, and the Sóstó Musical Fountain are worth a visit.
