Makers of Son of Saul are to receive Kossuth Award
László Nemes Jeles, director of the Oscar winning Son of Soul, alongside with Mátyás Erdély, cameraman and Géza Röhrig, main actor are going to be given Hungary’s topmost state award on the 15th of March, states origo.hu, based on a confirmation provided to TV2.
The award stands for the acknowledgement of one’s forming and reserving Hungarian culture and cultural values.
Tamás Zányi, sound engineer of Son of Saul has already been rewarded: he became an Érdemes Művész (Artist of Merit) of Hungary. The success of the movie began at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival where it received the Grand Prix award. This was followed by a win at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony and then the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Academy Awards.
Earlier, rumour had it that the makers of Son of Saul would get Kossuth Award, especially when it turned out that, by state order, 57.2 million forints were separated to cover the costs of the Kossuth and Széchenyi Awards.
Interestingly, László Nemes Jeles at the age of 39 is not the youngest to get the award as István Szabó was 37, while Zoltán Fábri was 36 when he received his first Kossuth Award, after more than a decade of theatre work. Moreover, Szabó by that time had done four feature films, whereas it is the first feature movie of Nemes Jeles.
