Slovenian paintings on display at Art Hall

Budapest (MTI) – An exhibition of Slovenian paintings from the past nine decades opened at Budapest’s Art Hall (Mucsarnok), in Heroes’ Square, on Thursday.

The exhibition titled “Masters and their masters – Tradition and continuity in Slovenian painting” is part of a Hungarian-Slovenian art exchange programme dubbed “The Slovenian Connection”.

Gyorgy Szego, the venue’s art director, noted that a Hungarian exhibition opened on July 1 in Ljubljana.

Peter Hoppal, state secretary for culture, said at the exhibition’s opening that bilateral relations between Hungary and Slovenia had continually grown stronger over the past two decades, adding that cultural relations were key to the progress. He praised the state of Slovenia for setting an example for Europe by providing cultural autonomy to ethnic Hungarians in Slovenia.

Anton Persak, state secretary for the Slovenian culture ministry, said the idea of an art exchange programme was first raised two years ago.

Ksenija Skrilec, Slovenia’s ambassador to Hungary, noted that the programme was made possible by support from Slovenian president Borut Pahor and Hungary’s head of state Janos Ader.
