PHOTOS: Budapest’s only free beach on the Danube opens next week
The summer season will kick off at Budapest’s only free Danube beach on 30 June. The RĂ³mai part is the only beach near the river in Hungary’s marvellous capital where you do not have to pay to get a grasp of bathing in the ice-cold stream during a hot summer day.
According to enbudapestem.hu, the official news website of the Hungarian capital, the RĂ³mai beach is to open on 30 June. You can also find the place under the name RĂ³mai PlĂ¡zs. HERE is their official Facebook page and HERE you can read an article about the best outdoor beaches near Budapest.
2023 is the fourth consecutive year that the RĂ³mai opens for the public and tourists of Budapest. Among the pros, one can list the trees near the beach providing shelter from the scorching summer heat between two bathings. The exact venue is the territory between Kossuth Lajos Ă¼dĂ¼lÅ‘part 15-17. Its width is 500 metres, marked by two buoys. The water quality was perfect last year, but the beach was only open between 10 AM and 7 PM, enbudapestem.hu wrote.
The water is better for swimmers than a 50-metre-long pool. If you catch the pace, you can swim for hours without moving anywhere because of the strong drift. Furthermore, since the Danube is a river, it will never get too warm, unlike Hungary’s lakes. There are changing rooms, new camping chairs, while professional lifeguards care about your safety.
But you should not forget your slippers or swim shoes at home because the riverbed is rocky and covered with clams. Furthermore, by 11 AM, the sand on the beach gets so hot that your feet would burn without protection. It is also good to know that the sun hits the beach during the morning, and in the afternoon, the trees’ shadows start to grow, so if we can recommend a time when you should visit the beach, it is the afternoon.
Moreover, there are drinking wells, toilets, diaper changing rooms, and showers at the beach. The water quality is constantly monitored. The beach will be open between 30 June and 20 August this year.
There are only two beaches near the River Danube in Budapest where you can bathe. One is the RĂ³mai PlĂ¡zs, the other is the SHO Beach, but you must pay an entrance fee. HERE is their Facebook page. If you want to enjoy the summer at Budapest’s sea-like beach, you must go to Lake Lupa. We wrote about that beach in THIS article.
