Hungary does not want to leave the European Union because its basic principles are good, but it wants to “take over political control in Brussels, it wants to occupy the EU”, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Friday.
He told commercial news station HirTV that the cooperation of European people, the common market, and “combining each others’ strengths while attending to each others’ weaknesses” were good ideas that could serve Hungary’s intererests well.
At the same time, he said there was no need to establish a “superstate” that would treat its members as “provinces”.
“We don’t need a Brussels like that, but one that supports the nations’ self-respect and sovereignty and allows countries to decide how they want to live depending on their own cultural traditions,” he said. “One that controls the market but does not want to say how a Pole, a Hungarian, or a Portuguese should live,” he added.
“The upcoming European parliamentary elections should be won and political control in Brussels should be taken over,” he said.

Our strengths would be … Leadership? Weakness – we need money. Lots of it. Ideally other people´s, EU money. And Schengen. And the Customs Union.
What a brilliant idea, cut off ties to countries which adds up to ~80% of exports and 70% of imports. What can go wrong?
But the EU really really would not mind if Hungary left. Maybe the EU would actually welcome it because Hungary time and time again is the skunk at the EU garden party. It’s really not something I enjoy saying but it is the truth. The one thing that is certain is that Hungary single handedly is pushing the EU to alter itself to take away veto powers which will be replaced by a supermajority before new members are admitted. It’s coming.
What planet is this present Prime Minister of Hungary Victor Orban living on.
VIKTOR IS RIGHT AND ALL POWER SHOULD BE IN HIS HANDS. LONG LIVE VIKTOR!!!
Then we, Hungarians, would owe all the exrea money, over our contributions, that we have spent, just like the UK owed. WAKE UP
^^^ For someone so good at criticizing the PM, you sure can’t seem to spell his name (or other words) right.
But if Hungary leaves the EU, who will the EU dump on so regularly instead? Poland? Someone needs to play the heel for that WWE circus.
