Police detain record number of illegal entrants
Budapest, September 15 (MTI) – Police detained a record number of 9,380 people who entered Hungary illegally on Monday, the national police said on Tuesday.
Legal proceedings have been launched against 13 people on people smuggling charges and against five people on document forgery, the police said on its website.
Under stricter rules that took effect on Tuesday, crossing Hungary’s border illegally qualifies as a crime, carrying a three-year prison sentence and expulsion from the country.
People smugglers may face tougher prison terms than previously. For instance, organisers of such operations could get 10 to 20 years in prison.
