Unexpected: President Xi will announce colossal Chinese carmaking plant near Hungarian city

Chinese President Xi Jinping will come to Hungary in May to meet with PM Viktor Orbán in Budapest. However, according to the information acquired by Szabad Európa (Free Europe), a Hungarian media outlet, Xi and Orbán will visit another Hungarian city. Instead of admiring its treasures, they will announce the building of a colossal Chinese carmaking plant.

Orbán and Xi to announce the newest Chinese investment in Hungary

The Chinese President will spend two days in Hungary: one in Budapest and another in Pécs, Southern Hungary. That is because he will meet with PM Orbán in the capital but travel to Pécs to announce the arrival of Great Wall Motors, a Chinese carmaking company, which plans to build a plant near the Southern Hungarian city.

Before this, Xi will meet with French President Macron and Serbian President Vučić. Gergely Gulyás, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, said during Thursday’s Cabinet Briefing that Xi will arrive in Hungary on 8 May and stay until 10 May. 9 May marks the anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe.

We know little about the detailed program of the Chinese leader. However, Szabad Európa‘s unnamed sources said Xi and Orbán would travel to Pécs to announce the building of Great Wall Motors’ (GWM) first European plant near Bicsérd, a village close to Pécs.

Will the Chinese carmaking plant harm Pécs’s water supply?

First, mfor.hu shared information about GWM’s plans in Hungary in March. One month later, 24.hu wrote that a 600-hectare land was reclassified near Pécs to an industrial zone. The area has a key role in the city’s water supply. They also speculated that the Chinese would probably build a battery plant, but that suspicion was proven wrong.

Mfor.hu wrote in March that GWM will produce medium-category Ora and premium-category Wey cars. The Chinese company sold 3,400 of the latter in Germany in 2023. The company also makes electric cars and batteries.

Six hundred hectares seems enormous compared to BYD’s 40 hectares in Szeged. We wrote about that investment and why locals are outraged in THIS article.

The Chinese will import employees to Szeged

The Chinese company plans to employ 8-9 thousand people in Szeged. If the Hungarian workforce were not enough, they would hire Romanians and Serbians to do the job. That is why they will build a container town with 1,400 places.

Based on informants, the Hungarian government did not want the Chinese to bring their new plant to Szeged. However, the Chinese liked the city’s “political stability” (László Botka has been the city’s mayor since 2002) and that it is near the planned Belgrade-Budapest railway.

Minister deleted articles about the Chinese investment

Several government-close media outlets republished Mfor’s original article about the GWM investment in March. However, Antal Rogán and his ministry made them delete those writings. That is because the Hungarian government did not want to leak the story before the conclusion of the negotiations with the Chinese.

According to VSquare’s newsletter, that story clearly shows how dependent the Orbán cabinet is on the Chinese investors.

Based on the news, Xi’s delegation in Hungary will number more than 400. Furthermore, we should expect stricter road closures in Budapest, Pécs and at Budapest Airport than during Pope Francis’s visit.

  1. Incredible stupidity by Fidesz allowing mighty Communists China in to Hungary.
The Hungarian freedom fighters of ’56 will be turning over in their graves.
Orbán will find that he will have to do what Xi wants without any buts, as the Communists do not believe in democracy.
And it is unlikely to benefit Hungary’s workers, as they will bring their own, including their Police, with them.
This absurd policy will destroy Fidesz, as the Chinese with more than a billion of them are far eastern Asians, and they will be unsuitable for the European, Hungarian Christian culture — the native population will suffer.

  2. Comments above, you are forgetting, orban said that Hungary is a sovereign country! (Sarcastic mode off) by the way, do you remember the fidesz banners that said “dont let soros to get the last laugh”? Guess who is laughing at you now? Poor Hungary, still believe orban is a messiah!

  3. Perilous decision – if ENTERTAINED by MILLIONS of Hungarians.
WHAT is Going on in Hungary ?

  4. It is insane what the Orbán gang did to our country. Bringing it step by step under communist Chinese control!

  5. Nick, you come to the right conclusions. Those idiots of Fidesz created a far eastern Asians (communist minded) Chinese minority in just a little more than a decade, and it will not stop here.

  6. NOT the first plant in Europe, Do your research please, GWM already have a plant at Lovech in Bulgaria for about 10 years now.
