Referendum – DK: Orbán voted for quotas

Budapest, October 4 (MTI) – The president of the European Council has confirmed in a letter that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in February voted in favour of European Union migrant quotas, the spokesman of the opposition Democratic Coalition party said on Tuesday.

Zsolt Gréczy told a news conference that DK’s managing director, Csaba Molnár, had turned to Donald Tusk, the council’s president, with a request for information on how Orbán voted. In his reply, Tusk confirmed that the Hungarian prime minister had indeed voted for the resolution on the relocation of migrants.

Gréczy said that Tusk’s letter underlined that all prime ministers and heads of state of EU members unanimously adopted the resolution.

He said the result of Sunday’s referendum on EU migrant quotas, which was declared invalid by the national election commission due to low turnout, had been “fortunate” for the prime minister from this aspect since he would not have to go against his earlier decision to accept quotas. He added that in any case it had transpired from the EU Bratislava summit that there would be no binding quotas.

Orbán owes the country an explanation for why he pursued a deceitful anti-quota policy and initiated a referendum in opposition to his own decision, the DK politician added.
