FM Szijjártó calls US Ambassador Pressman a ‘leading figure’ of Hungarian opposition
David Pressman, the US ambassador to Budapest, is “a leading figure of the Hungarian opposition”, and his statements must be handled as such, the foreign minister said on Thursday.
At a press conference after an informal European Union foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Péter Szijjártó said in response to a question concerning Pressman’s criticism of Hungary’s “peace mission” that the US ambassador was “an opposition activist and one of the leading figures of the Hungarian opposition”.
“His statements must be assessed accordingly,” Szijjártó said, according to a ministry statement. “And if I want to talk about the contents of his opposition activist statements, then I could say that interestingly, when the Italian prime minister went to China, and said that China was an essential partner for dialogue in the current fragile international situation, then the opposition activist did not activate himself.”
“Or when President Zelensky called Donald Trump, he did not express any condemnation, or when the Ukrainian foreign minister recently visited China, we could not hear any criticism from him,” he added.
“So it is obvious that his statements came from and were inspired by his opposition position,” he said.
Commenting on criticism voiced by his Lithuanian counterpart, Szijjártó said Gabrielius Landsbergis was “one of the most pro-war politicians” in Europe.
“He is competing for the title of most pro-war politician; he regularly criticises Hungary’s pro-peace position. I believe his assessment of the situation cannot be considered realistic in any aspect,” he added.

The quotes from Szijjarto here are completely bizarre inferences of malign US involvement with Hungary’s opposition from whatever Pressman has said. Szijjarto makes no sense. Remember there is no hypocrisy that Fidesz politicians are incapable of. They have all been actively supporting opposition presidential candidate Donald Trump and Orban of course went to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida to meet him. Part of the job of any ambassador is to meet with all sides including opposition figures in the host country. There has been, however, no meeting by Biden or anyone else in his cabinet with opposition leader Peter Magyar so Fidesz put a cork in your mouth and another up your backside. The US government has always had a policy of avoiding open advocacy of one party or another in fellow democracies and expects the same when it comes to US politics which Fidesz of course violates.
You make some valid points, Larry. But, our Foreign Minister has been playing the same tune since he was awarded the merit badge by Sergey Lavrov before Russia’s last invasion of Ukraine in 2022. That award certified our Foreign Minister’s crucial role in Russia’s Hungarian shopping trips culminating in the early 2020s. Not to be outdone our Prime Minister also received similar accolades from Russian Orthodox patriarch Kirill for services rendered relating to European Union sanctions on Kirill and his enterprises. For us to think that either our Foreign Minister or our Prime Minister will suddenly start singing a new song is like whistling in the wind. We original westerners have a phrase that expresses it perfectly “It ain’t gonna happen”. In the meantime I sincerely wish that they would quit with their constant Russian favoritism in the name of “Peace”. Our Hungarian government does not have a monopoly on hopes for peace. Promoting that idea is an insult to everyone with an IQ over 60.
Since Hungary is still a democracy, our hope is to rectify this disgusting circumstance in the next election (2026 I think). The problem is that there will have to be many political casualties at the MP level to realize that. Yup, I know. Now we are back to “It ain’t gonna happen”. But, I can still hope that it does.
Since Hungary
Quality contributions – there commentary(s) by Larry and Grumpy Oldman.
Hungary still being a DEMOCRACY – it – “ain’t ” going to return AGAIN to Hungary as long as the Name Victor Mihaly. Orban remains Prime Minister.
Really men, Pressman was sent to Hungary because his membership in the LGBT community and not his ability as a diplomat. Pressman is the leader of HATE HUNGARY CLUB.
The hope is that President Trump will be reinstalled in the White House and Pressmen will be put out to pasture, where he belongs.
The democrats sent some not-so-great diplomats to Hungary, but Pressman is the worst. His name will be used as a swear words for many years to come. Hungary should erect a statue of Pressman, place carts of tomatoes next to it for the population to throw the tomatoes or anything at hand at the statue to express their true feelings about the failed diplomat. That would be an appropriate reward.
Pressman has done nothing but usurp Christian values and his appointment itself should show that the US no longer has respect for traditional family values.
What did Rush say? It was Adam and Eve, Not Adam And Steve! Your own talk radio hosts say this!
Yet this degenerate is whom the US/Biden administration appointed to a Christian nation as ambassador? You ought to be ashamed of yourselves…
I’ve got news for you, dear Maria, it would appear Donny’s not heading for the White House for a second time. He spent so long hammering old Biden he’s managed to engineer a far more serious adversary for himself. Not only is she ahead in the polls now, Donny’s doing a good job of flushing himself down the proverbial lavatory further eroding his prospects.
mariavontheresa, you missed an important point. Hungary can expel David Pressman at any time, and for any reason. However, it’s usually for acts of war or major crimes. Does Pressman qualify for that? If not, perhaps his sexual orientation, Jewish heritage or friendship with George Clooney is reason enough.
By the way, Donald Trump, whether elected this November or not, will not save America from anything, and he will not save Hungary’s “govern by degree” leaders from David Pressman. I do not understand why politicians find it necessary to engage in hate campaigns and name calling. From my neighbors to Fidesz friends to Orban Viktor, my fellow Hungarians are exactly that, fellows. They are worthy of my respect and admiration no matter what our political differences are. I know. I should practice what I preach. I wish that Hungary’s ruling class would do the same. That might just lead to some real lifestyle gains for my countrymen.
Too many PedoFidesz afficionados can’t cope with the fact that some people are gay including the US ambassador. Did the Hungarian government had problems meeting with gay Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar for the five years he held the position over two terms? It’s hilariously stupid. Get over it and stop being primitive.
Larry – maybe you don’t know trumps ambassador to largest country in the EU and elevated to national security advisor of the US. The biggest difference was his level of intelligence compared to pressman and was reason he was put in the position. Much of the US goverment is controlled by very low IQ people. I fear there will be another attemp on trump.
You will have tampons for young boys bathrooms in the EU along with insanity in Ukaine- it never would have happened if trump was president. I fear for the people of world if people don’t wake up.
Most of you miss the point of the word “diplomat”. Some of the definition of the word is peacemaker or conciliator. Pressman is certainly none of these. Pressman has been disparaging the country from the moment he set foot on the sacred land. Now, being an LGBTQ member is a personal preference, but Pressman is so ashamed of his tendencies that he feels he must convert the nation to accept deviation as norm. Pressman needs serious psychiatric care in a mental hospital and should not be allowed to run free in Hungary.
@ Larry, the problem with Pressman is that he doesn’t differentiate between his personal and professional life. If he had kept his sexual preference to himself, it wouldn’t be an issue, but he made it one, the minute he walked out on our streets flying his rainbow and doing public marches; I don’t want to see that and I don’t want our children to see it either.
Is it official US foreign policy for your representative to promote activity that could be considered as degenerate or insult the host nation? It seems like with Pressman, you are trying to provoke a response and throw his personal views in our face, every chance he gets.
