Hungarian defence minister: Chad security vitally important

chad hungary mission

Chad is the only stable state in the Sahel, and it can be seen as “an exporter of stability” in the region, the defence minister said, adding that its security was of special importance to Europe and Hungary.

After talks with counterpart Dago Yacouba, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said the fact that Yacouba’s first visit abroad since he entered office took him to Hungary showed that both countries considered cooperation as a matter of strategic importance.

The ministers signed an agreement on military cooperation prior to the press conference.

The Hungarian government is determined that problems must be resolved where they arise, and has therefore decided to play an active role in preserving Chad’s stability, he said. As part of a complex support package,

a mission of 200 soldiers will be sent to Chad.

They will offer training and mentoring to the Chad army in the fight against terrorism, and with a view to reducing illegal migration, he added.

Hungary will play special attention to EU participation in the Sahel during its presidency of the European Union Council.

Yacouba said developments in the Sahel had an effect on world peace, and Chad needed help from the EU, Hungary and Africa in order to cope with numerous challenges such as terrorism, smuggling and illegal migration. Cooperation between Chad and Hungary is crucial for establishing peace, he added.

International military exercise involves entirety of Hungarian Armed Forces

hussars

The Adaptive Hussars 23 international military exercise involves the entirety of the Hungarian Armed Forces, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in Hajdúhadház on Monday.

The military exercise is the largest in Hungary in the last 30 years, Szalay-Bobrovniczky told a press conference before inspecting the exercise, calling it a test for the Hungarian Armed Forces, cooperation with allies and Hungarian public administration.

“This test is going very well so far, but we, of course, have to wait till the end before drawing the final conclusions,” the minister said.

The objective of the exercise is to test the military’s readiness for and response to an imagined situation threatening Hungary’s security, the minister said. It also tests the capabilities of civilian public administration when it comes to troop movements and logistics, he added.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasised the importance of testing the ability to cooperate with allies, noting that several NATO forces were also taking part in the exercise.

He noted that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had also inspected certain elements of the exercise on Monday, namely a bridge-building exercise at Tiszaroff and a jump exercise of Italian and Hungarian paratroopers in Nyíregyháza.

Adaptive Hussars 23 involves around 5,000 Hungarian troops, including 500 reservists, he said.

Armed Forces Commander Gábor Böröndi said the exercise involved land, air and maritime forces. The air defence system has been activated, and the air and ground forces are moving, he said. “This is test of the preparations we’ve made over the past years,” he added.

Orbán is travelling with Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and Gábor BÅ‘röndi, Chief of the HDF General Staff, to eastern Hungary where operations involving several thousand soldiers testing Hungary’s defence capabilities are under way.

Orbán earlier heard reports from military leaders about the experiences gained so far from the exercise.

Hungarian DefMin: Türkiye is a strategic partner for us

Defence Minister Niger

Türkiye is a strategic partner of primary importance for Hungary, with long-established defence and military ties, the defence minister said after talks with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler, in Budapest on Thursday.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said the talks focused on defence and security cooperation. Türkiye is a member of the NATO command deployed to Hungary, and is currently participating in Adaptive Hussars 23, the largest international military exercise of the past 30 years, he added.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky said Türkiye was “an extremely important player” in regional security policy, and “its counsel is indispensable regarding the conflicts threatening our security”.

A NATO member and a “leading nation in the region”, Türkiye’s stance on the war in Ukraine was similar to that of Hungary, he said.

Both countries are committed to promoting an immediate ceasefire and peace talks, and to avoiding escalation and further sacrifice, he said. Hungary and the region has a vital interest in peace and strengthening economic and trade ties, he added. Hungary and Türkiye also agree that NATO, the largest defence alliance in the world, should prioritise the monitoring of terror threats, he said.

Hungary also has an interest in preserving stability in Africa, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said. As part of a complex aid package, it is deploying a military mission to Chad next spring, with an aim of solving problems locally rather than importing them into Europe, he added.

The ministers also agreed on the importance of stability in the Western Balkans, a region where both countries deploy troops to NATO operations.

Regarding the defence industry, Szalay-Bobrovniczky briefed Guler on the modernisation of Hungary’s Armed Forces, including equipping the entire army with NATO compatible equipment as well as an expansion of the defence industry to ensure supplies and contribute to the country’s economic growth, he said.

It was recently announced that Gidran armed vehicles will soon be manufactured in Hungary, he noted. One of the most important vehicles of the Hungarian Armed Forces will be manufactured with a Turkish licence, further strengthening bilateral ties, he added.

Guler called talks “honest and constructive”. Türkiye sees its cooperation with Hungary, “a friendly and brotherly ally”, as especially important, he said.

He said he and Szalay-Bobrovniczky had reviewed the two countries’ bilateral ties, security issues in the Euro-Atlantic region as well as issues regarding their NATO membership.

They also expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the defence industry and other sectors. He praised “the development of … Hungary and its Armed Forces”, and invited his Hungarian counterpart to a visit in Türkiye .

Hungarian DefMin opens Adaptive Hussars 23 exercise

Hungarian Defence Forces

Hungary’s government sees the security of Hungarians and preserving peace as its priority, the defence minister said in HódmezÅ‘vásárhely on Tuesday, at the opening event of the Adaptive Hussars 23 international military exercise held in the presence of President Katalin Novák.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said Hungary was building a military capable of facing all security challenges in close cooperation with its allies.

In the current “era of dangers”, Europe faces war, illegal migration and the threat of terrorism, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said. The national security service has warned of the possibility of “trained soldiers of terrorist organisations, and with them the threat of terrorism, at the borders of Hungary,” he said.

At the same time, the Armed Forces and defence industry are thriving, with new factories, successful recruitment, and performance showing “the Armed Forces have reached a new level”, he said.

Adaptive Hussars 23, a complex international exercise with participants from Italy, Turkiye, Croatia and the US, is taking place in several parts of the country, involving much of the Armed Forces and public administration, he said. The exercise is about testing and developing the country’s defence capabilities, he said.

The initial phase involves some 1,000 troops, 340 of whom are foreign and 170 Hungarian.

Besides Hungarian and foreign military units deployed to Hungary, the exercise involves some 4,500 members of Hungarian public administration, he said.

Adaptive Hussars 23 is the largest exercise of the Hungarian Armed Forces this year, “a test of everything we have built and created so far. We will see where we stand and what and how we should bolster further,” he said.

The exercise will improve cooperation between various branches of public administration and soldiers, while public servants will have a better knowledge of how to help each other in joint tasks, he said.

In military life “we must always hope for the best but prepare for the worst. We must be ready to do what needs to be done for our family, our localities and the country…” Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

Did you know? Hungary is in a state of emergency and will remain so

Hungarian parliament

Parliament on Monday approved an amendment that authorises the government to extend by 180 days the state of emergency declared last May in connection with the war in Ukraine.

The motion passed with 131 votes for, 52 against and one abstention.

The law is aimed at managing the fallout of the war and the humanitarian disaster in Hungary.

The government first declared a state of emergency in connection with the war in Ukraine in May 2022, and MPs have voted to extend it several times.

The proposal on Sweden’s accession to NATO, which has been pending for almost 16 months, still does not fit into the Hungarian Parliament’s agenda. It really seems that Hungary will be the last one to clear the obstacle to Swedish accession.

As we wrote before, Ukraine will not win on the battlefield, EU needs plan B, says PM Orbán, details HERE.

MPs approve Hungary military mission to Chad

Parliament on Monday approved a Hungarian military mission to Chad, with up to 200 soldiers scheduled to serve from spring next year.

MPs voted with 143 for, 30 against and two abstentions.

The mission will underpin efforts to promote international peace and security as well as the fight against terrorism. Also, the aim is to undergird the stability of the Sahel region with a view to curbing illegal migration pressure on Europe.

The mission is in response to an invitation by Chad’s president for Hungarian soldiers to be stationed there until Dec 31, 2025.

Military vehicles will flood the Hungarian roads in the next few weeks

Military convoys Hungary

The Hungarian Armed Forces will perform a multinational military exercise dubbed “Adaptive Hussars 23” with the participation of NATO forces in the country’s entire territory between November 2-26, the defence minister said on Thursday.

The exercise is aimed at testing Hungary’s defence capabilities and strengthening cooperation with public administration at a time when “we live in an era of threats posed to Europe by illegal migration and terrorism”, the defence ministry quoted Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the minister, as saying.

During the time of the exercise, an increased traffic of military vehicles can be expected in public roads, the ministry said, advising Hungarians to drive more carefully and thanking them and the public for their patience.

Civilian vehicles cannot enter military convoys. There will be accompanying vehicles helping the convoys. Hungary’s Defence Ministry promised to provide regular updates about the exercise’s progress, vezes.hu wrote.

Italian Beretta to manufacture arms in Hungary

Turkish combat vehicle Gidrán

Hungary’s N7 Nemzeti Védelmi Ipari Innovation Holding has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italian arms manufacturer Beretta on ammunition production in Hungary, the defence ministry said on Thursday.

The MoU signed with Beretta covers the production of 7.62mm and 12.7mm ammunition for the Lynx and Gidran combat vehicles, respectively, the ministry cited Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky as saying.

With both types of vehicles now being manufactured in Hungary, the ammunition needed for them will also soon be made here, the minister said.

Demand for both types of ammunition is high amid the current security situation, but their domestic production will be able to increase the security of their supply, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said. Hungary will also be able to produce them for export in the long run, thereby bolstering the economy, he added.

Turkish defence company Nurol Makina and N7 Nemzeti Védelmi Ipari Innovation Holding signed on Tuesday an MoU on a joint venture to manufacture Gidrán combat vehicles.

The companies’ chief executives Engin Ufuk Aykol and László Palkovics, respectively, signed the deal in the presence of Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the defense minister, in the ministry building.

The deal involves production and assembly as well as research and development in Hungary, the ministry said in a statement.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky noted efforts under way to revamp the Hungarian armed forces, saying that this must be achieved in a way that insulates Hungary from supplier risks. This entails building a “serious” defence industry in a way that serves the armed forces development as well as that of the Hungarian economy as a whole, he said. Hungary views Türkiye as a strategic partner in this, he added.

So far the assembly of the Gidrán combat vehicle has taken place in Kaposvár, and now the entire vehicle itself will also be manufactured in Gyor, in western Hungary, at the Raba manufacturing site. This, he added, was “a huge step forward” because of the export potential as well as satisfying domestic needs.

At least 200 new jobs will be created thanks to the deal, he said, adding that a broad network of domestic suppliers will also be involved.

The JV will be named Gidrán, an ancient Hungarian breed of horse ridden by hussars due to its excellent fighting ability, the minister said. Here is a video of the Gidrán:

Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System inaugurated in Győr

Two sub-units of the high-tech Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) were inaugurated at a Hungarian army base in Győr, in north-western Hungary, on Thursday.

By installing NASAMS, the Hungarian Armed Forces will have a cutting-edge ground-based air defence system providing high-altitude medium-range capabilities, Defence Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky said at the ceremony.

The strongest feature of the NASAMS used in 12 other countries is that it enables the formation of a network of command positions, he said.

NASAMS operate with US-made premier AMRAAM missiles which are widely used in other NATO countries as well as by Gripen fighter jets, the minister added.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky noted that the Surface-to-Air Missile Operations Center (SAMOC), a complete infrastructure provided by the Airbus Defence and Space company allowing country-wide coordination started operating last year.

The installation of ELM-2084 multifunctional radars purchased from Israel is ongoing, the minister said, adding that similar radars operate as “the eyes” of Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system.

Record time project

Addressing the ceremony, Kyrre Lohne, vice president of Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace AS (KDA), the company that developed NASAMS, said the inauguration took place in record time, only three years after the purchase contract was signed.

Hungary is the first NATO country to use NASAMS extended-range AMRAAM missiles, he said, adding that the purchase had been made under cooperation of the Hungarian and Norwegian government with the participation of the US government and Raytheon, a major US defence contractor and industrial corporation.

KDA will supply another four NASAMS sub-units and the technical equipment of a smaller back-up sub-unit by next summer, according to the press material distributed at the event.

Here are some photos of the NASAMS system and the inauguration:

Hungarian soldiers fighting in Israel had to seek refuge in a bunker

Hungarian Defence Force

Sixteen Hungarian soldiers are currently stationed at the Israeli-Lebanese border. Most recently, they had to seek refuge in a bunker to escape Israeli airstrikes.

Hungarian soldiers abroad

Sixteen Hungarian soldiers are stationed at the Israeli border in southern Lebanon. According to the Irish Mirror, these soldiers, along with several of their fellow service members, were compelled to take shelter in bunkers.

Hungarian peacekeepers are deployed with the Lebanese armed organisation Hezbollah. They are accompanied by 338 Irish soldiers, as well as Polish and Maltese troops. An Irish army spokesman said that the peacekeepers entered the purpose-built bunker at 1 pm local time and emerged nearly four hours later. No injuries were reported.

A total of 16 Hungarian soldiers are participating in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon, with 13 of them involved in the incident. A multi-ethnic unit appears to be operating near At Tiri, as well as at the base on the Israeli border. The majority of the soldiers are of Irish and Polish nationality. The first rotation of Hungarian soldiers took place in September.

Statement from the Ministry of Defence

The Hungarian Defence Forces have also confirmed the news. Currently, 16 Hungarian soldiers are serving in Lebanon, comprising the second contingent. A welcome-back ceremony for the first batch was held at the Maria Theresia barracks on 19 October.

Colonel Norbert Vadászi recalled that in July last year, the Honvéd Vezérérérkar (National Defence Headquarters) assigned the corps the task of preparing and forming the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in six-month rotations until 2025.

“They have been assigned duties such as surveillance, patrolling, and collaborating with the Lebanese army. We maintain regular contact with them,” the Hungarian Defence Forces informed hvg.hu.

“We, Hungarian soldiers, will primarily carry out patrol duties and will be responsible for guarding and protecting the camp,” said Lieutenant Krecz. He added that they maintained continuous communication with the troops on the field, allowing them to make thorough preparations in advance.

VIDEO: WWII fighter aircraft found in Lake Balaton, weapons recovered

fighter aircraft recovered from balaton

Last week, experts recovered a fighter aircraft that crashed into Lake Balaton during World War II in the Balatonakarattya area. Now, new objects have been recovered from the wreckage.

As a result of several days of hard work by five units of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the experts of the Military History Institute and Museum of the Ministry of Defence, the first large part of a Hungarian Messerschmitt fighter plane that crashed into Lake Balaton during World War II was recovered on 10 October, honvedelem.hu reported. The wreckage was covered with eighty centimetres of mud.

Since then, new objects have been recovered from the wreckage, likebalaton.hu reports. This time, experts have managed to uncover a significant element of the fighter’s armament. Some of these were found in surprisingly good condition, as the mud had preserved them in excellent condition. Some pieces have survived in astonishingly good shape to the civilian eye.

The newly found weapon was still covered in a layer of mud, but the ballistics examination concluded that it could be safely transported to the cordoned-off part of the beach, where it was to be thoroughly examined again.

This find is special because, apart from the one that has now been found after nearly 80 years, there is no other surviving Hungarian Messerschmitt fighter aircraft known in the world.

Hungarian government to send military mission to Africa

hungary helps chad

The Hungarian government will send a military mission to Chad with the aim to help bring migration under control and provide humanitarian assistance, the defence minister said on Friday.

“We live in an age full of threats. We are seeing the second serious armed conflict unfolding and an influx of millions of migrants from Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan to Europe,” Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky told a press conference, adding that terrorism had also become a threat.

Chad, a country in the Sahel region, has a key role in containing migration from Africa, the minister said, noting that terrorists organisations had recently become more active in the region. “Chad has remained the only stable state there, and holds many migrants arriving from other African countries,” he said, adding that instability in Chad could trigger a wave of further hundreds of millions to Europe.

He criticised Brussels over its failure to act to contain migration and protect Europe’s borders “despite Hungary’s repeated calls since the beginning”. “No steps have been taken over the past eight years while immigrants keep flowing in along the migration routes.”

“The problem is getting worse. So we need to provide help,” Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

Hungary will provide help asked for by the Chadian president in form of “a complex package” that includes humanitarian assistance, a medical mission and agricultural development support.

There are US and French forces in Chad, but “Hungary will have a mission on its own”, he said.

A draft decree on the military mission planned to be deployed in 2024 will be submitted to parliament at the beginning of next week, the minister said. If parliament approves it, preparations would get under way to train a force of at least 200 troops, he said.

Government: Hungary participating in NATO joint tasks

Official Photo of the NATO Ministers of Defence and Sweden

After a meeting of NATO defence ministers, the defence ministry issued a statement saying that Hungary is taking its share of the alliance’s joint tasks in accordance with its commitments.

At the meeting in Brussels, the first since the alliance’s July summit in Vilnius, ministers discussed the implementation of joint deterrence, new collective defence arrangements, and reviewed ongoing operations, the ministry said on Friday, noting that Gábor Gion, the state secretary for defence strategy, attended.

On the sidelines, a letter of intent was signed on NATO’s cross-border airspace initiative on joint training and air policing.

The statement noted the presence of the Hungarian-led multinational NATO battlegroup on the eastern flank and the multinational division headquarters in Székesfehérvár set up jointly with Croatia and Slovakia.

Operations in Iraq and the Western Balkans, as well as opportunities for cooperation with the EU with a view to bolstering stability in the region were discussed in the presence of an EU representative, the statement said.

Hungary is involved at the highest levels of international alliance missions in the Western Balkans, it added, noting Major General László Sticz will take over the EUFOR ALTHEA mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina from January 2024.

Hungary constantly keeps southern challenges on NATO’s agenda, the statement said, noting that the situation around Kosovo “is tense”.

Hungary strongly backs maintaining the presence of NATO and the EU in the region, it added.

Terrorist attack against Israel

Also discussed was the terrorist attack against Israel, and Joav Gallant, the country’s defence minister, briefed allies via video link. Hungary assured Israel of its solidarity and support, the statement said.

Also, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council took place at the ministerial level for the first time. Hungary’s position is that NATO should not get involved in the war in Ukraine, according to a foreign ministry statement, adding that “we shared our concerns” about minority rights in Ukraine, insisting that cooperation must continue to be based on common values and decisions.

Hungarian Air Force rescues people from Israel, Chain Bridge in Israeli colours – UPDATED

Hungarian Air Force Israel

Fully 325 people were rescued from Israel aboard two aircraft of the Hungarian Air Force, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said late on Sunday.

Szijjártó said on Facebook that the aircraft had left Israel’s airspace and were safely on their way to Hungary, and noted his government’s priority to help Hungarians out of Israel in view of the recent armed conflict. He thanked Israel, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania for “the cooperation of their authorities in quickly issuing their flight permits”.

Out of the 325 rescued people 46 are minors and 15 foreign nationals, Szijjártó added in a recently posted video. He said the third Hungarian rescue mission took off from Israel today morning with 110 people on board. The Hungarian Air Force’s carrier left Israel andreached safe airspace.

To show solidarity with the victims of the brutal attack against Israel, Budapest’s iconic Chain Bridge shone in the colours of the Israelin flag yesterday evening. Here is Mayor Gergely Karácsony‘s relevant Facebook post:

And here is a video made by the Israeli embassy in Budapest: Hungary stands with Israel

Minister: Hungary fully supports Israel

Hungary fully supports Israel in its fight for sovereignty, security and right to self-defence, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office said on Monday.
Gergely Gulyás told an event dubbed International Pro-Israel Summit organised by the Center for Fundamental Rights that “true friends show in times of trouble.”

“The first thing we can wish for Israel in the current situation is that it should regain control over the entire territory of the state of Israel and establish the security guarantees needed to prevent similar bestial attacks from happening in the future,” Gulyás said.

The events also serve as a message to Europe, showing that border protection should stand above debate. It must be a task for all countries that protect the external border zone of Schengen, he added.

“If we fail to do that, the current conflict may have tragic consequences also for Europe,” Gulyás said. Joining forces is most important in the current situation, meaning that the coalition behind Israel must be strong, he said. He called Saturday’s attacks on Israel “brutal” and “incompatible with human existence” and expressed “maximum solidarity” with Israel.

Gulyás warned that terrorists could come to Europe from Gaza unless the EU’s borders are protected. He also warned that migrants in several countries of Western Europe had welcomed the developments in Israel, and said “if Europe fails to consider its own security it could find itself on the losing side of this conflict, too.” He said supporting terrorism was impermissible. He also suggested that “US diplomacy should assess who is a friend and who is an enemy” adding that the US government had “deviated from the earlier directions set under President Trump”. “As a result they might have made deals under which they might have also supported countries promoting terrorism,” he insisted.

Hungary, which has the largest Jewish community in central Europe, is proud to maintain special relations with Israel, Gulyás said. “Israel faces continuous threats and makes great sacrifices to preserve the most fundamental human values,” Gulyás said. He also voiced concern about Israel’s community of some 300,000 people of Hungarian origin.

Fundamental Rights chief Miklós Szánthó said Hungary and Israel were “not only political but natural alllies . champions of sovereignty”. He said “both countries will oppose even international trends if it comes to their sovereignty, their people, or protecting their borders.” “We are connected through a love of God, our homelands, and families . things that have come under fire by woke terrorists,” he insisted.

Yacov Hadas-Handelsman, Israel’s ambassador to Hungary, said Saturday’s attacks had come unexpected and he compared the developments to “a combination of 11.09 and the Bucha massacre”. He said the perpetrators must pay a “similar price”. Israel must win the war, he said, but added that “it will not be short”.

The ambassador advocated caution because “this murderous ideology cannot be changed”. “When we see that murdering children, women, and civilians is hailed in Toronto and Berlin and nobody stops the celebration, it indicates a problem not only for Israel but for the whole of the international community,” he said.

Hadas-Handelsman thanked the Hungarian government for its fighting discrimination against Israel at international forums and its zero tolerance for anti-Semitism. According to the ambassador, the Hungarian Jewish community is safe, it enjoys a freedom of expression and culture, and will not face such attacks as seen in other large cities of Europe. He also commended the Hungarian government’s investing large amounts of money in efforts to reinvigorate Jewish culture and preserve cemeteries.

Drone protection system to protect Hungarian public organisations

Loricatus Drone Delivery Box 10

A new Hungarian government decree requires Hungarian public organisations to use a drone protection system. 4iG Plc, a minion of the Orbán government, has just founded a drone protection company. All data related to the deployment of the system will be encrypted for 30 years from the date of its creation.

New government decree

According to a government decree published in the Hungarian Gazette on Tuesday evening, certain central state administration bodies must set up and operate a system to protect against attacks by unmanned aircraft.

Accordingly, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky may designate the central state administration body or its specific installation or the company which will be obliged to do so. On the basis of his proposal, the cabinet will issue a decree on which facilities that do not fall under the above-mentioned categories must be protected, Népszava reports.

The agencies and companies concerned must set up, maintain and operate the drone protection system at their own expense.

It is also important that all data related to the deployment of the drone protection system is encrypted for 30 years from the date of its creation.

The Hungarian Defence Forces, the Military National Security Service or any law enforcement agency may be involved in the works.

A day before the government decree is published, the pro-government company 4iG will set up a drone defence technology company.

EU’s Bosnia-Herzegovina operation to be led by Hungarian commander

Hungary defence forces military N7

Command of the European Union’s EUFOR ALTHEA mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be taken over by Hungarian Major General László Sticz from January 2024 for a one-year period, the defence minister said on Tuesday.

Preserving the stability of the Western Balkans region is a priority for the Hungarian government, as the countries there play a key role in halting illegal migrant waves, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in a statement.

Hungary has been part of the various regional military missions for decades, one of the most important of which is the EU’s EUFOR ALTHEA mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he said.

Hungarian soldiers over the years have been recognised for their role in the military alliance by being put in charge of the regional missions, the minister said.

Sticz’s appointment as ALTHEA commander was also backed by the Military Committee of the European Union and EUFOR Operation Commander Lt. Gen. Hubert Cottereau, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

The Hungarian Armed Forces will also be contributing its helicopter transport, air evacuation and ROLE 1 medical support capabilities, a bomb disposal crew, explosive detection dogs and a military police unit to the ALTHEA mission from next year, he said.

Sticz currently serves as commander of the Armed Forces’ Force Modernisation and Transformation Command. He has served in the Western Balkans missions and at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.

Defence Minister: We’re ensuring peace for Hungarians with best equipment

Visiting Krauss-Maffei Wegmann’s (KMW) factory in Munich on Thursday, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said: “We’re ensuring peace for Hungarians with the best equipment possible”.

Hungary has ordered 44 “top-notch-technology” Leopard 2A7 tanks manufactured by KMW, the minister said in a video posted on social media. The tanks have been offered to NATO, but will form a part of the Hungarian army’s “heavy brigade” guaranteeing the country’s security, he said.

The Leopard fleet will be completed with Leguan bridge-laying tanks and other types of military vehicle, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

Cooperation is ongoing with the KMW factory’s management regarding additional services, including simulation exercises and maintenance for supporting “this ultramodern, high-quality fleet” in the future.

“For peace we need strength; we’re continuing our work,” the minister said.
