Socialists: government’s data retention blocks creating cancer strategy

Hospital Socialists cancer EU

István Újhelyi, an MEP of the opposition Socialists, has said he would file a criminal report over the human resources ministry’s blocking of the release of data of public interest on health-care measures regarding the pandemic and other government-funded programmes.

Noting that the ministry had rejected his request to access to the country’s national cancer programme, Újhelyi said “the Fidesz government has made it a regular practice to reject publishing information of public interest.” The ministry had earlier denied access to government data on coronavirus protection measures, vaccinations and the purchase of Covid vaccines, he told an online press conference.

“The EU is currently in the process of drafting the community’s cancer prevention strategy.

Related elements that are important to Hungarians can only be successfully incorporated into that strategy if the relevant government documents can be accessed,”

Újhelyi, a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, said.

He accused the government of denying access because a “national cancer strategy does not exist”. Last year, 2.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer in the EU, 1.3 million of whom died, Újhelyi noted, highlighting the importance of taking urgent steps.

Otherwise, “the number of cancer cases is expected to go up by 24 percent by 2035,”

he said. Hungary has one of the highest cancer-related death rates in Europe, Újhelyi said, noting that 336 out of 100,000 Hungarian patients die of cancer while the figure in Austria is 234 and in Belgium 230.

Kyiv besieged: 18-month-old Hungarian girl with cancer had to flee to Hungary!

18 month old baby injured in Russian attack

Luca is barely past a year and a half, but she has already experienced the hardships of life at a young age. The little Hungarian girl from Transcarpathia is struggling with serious cancer, and now, they had to flee the war: she has been in Hungary as a war refugee since last Friday, where she is waiting for surgery. Blikk.hu made a report about the whole story.

The surgery of the girl could have only been performed in Kyiv

Luca’s parents had no choice but to flee to Hungary when the war began. Although they lived in Nagybégány, not far from the Hungarian border, in the Beregszász region, the surgery needed for the little girl could only be performed in the Ukrainian capital, hundreds of kilometres away, in Kyiv. However, this was no longer an option due to the Russian bombings.

In early December last year, it was revealed that Luca was struggling with a pelvic tumour, which resulted in two chemotherapy treatments. She should have had surgery after completing the treatments, but there is currently chaos in Kyiv hospitals. Doctors and nurses are fighting a superhuman fight for patients while the sound of sirens and bombings seeps in from the street. The patients hid in the basements of the buildings, receiving care there. Luca’s surgery and her life were in danger, but they could not undergo surgery at the Kyiv hospital.

They had to move

Since the surgery did not take place, the family had to move on. According to the family, although their home in the Kárpátalja / Transcarhpathia / Zakarpatska region is still safe, many are panicking, food prices have started to rise, and there is a shortage of stocks at times.

However, the family cannot run out of medication or wait months for vital surgery. Her father, mother and the child, Luca, came to Hungary.

Miskolc is the new home

The family was transported to the border by Ukrainian ambulances, from where they were taken to Miskolc by the staff of the National Ambulance Service. Thanks to the ambulances, the crossing was significantly faster, you would have had to wait at least a day by car.

In Miskolc, they are now trying to find out if Luca is in an operable state or if she will need even more chemotherapy. Friends and relatives at home, in Ukraine, ask about them several times a day, but the family says that they are safe now. They mentioned that they pray for them as well, they need it on the other side of the border too.

Hungary sending blood transfusion bags to Ukraine

Blood transfusion bag

Hungary is sending 10,000 blood transfusion bags to Ukraine, the foreign minister said on Facebook on Friday.

“Nothing can be more important than protecting lives,” Péter Szijjártó said, adding that the government was responding to an urgent request from Ukraine in cooperation with the national haematology services. He also said the aid package would arrive at the Hungary-Ukraine border in a few hours’ time, and that the 10,000 bags could serve as many as 30,000 injured.

He said the war had greatly increased the desire by the Ukrainian population to donate blood, but the country had a serious shortage of the special bags in which the blood is stored and transported.

Hungary “is helping wherever it can” through “the greatest humanitarian aid campaign in its history”, Szijjártó said, adding that “what people are going through in Ukraine is terrible and heart-wrenching”.

The bags were dispatched from Budapest by Ukrainian Ambassador Liubov Nepop and State Secretary Tamás Vargha.

Hungarian health waiting list unbearable, more money coming in

The Hungarian government is spending 13.6 billion forints (EUR 34.6m) on shortening waiting lists in Hungarian health care, the human resources minister said on Tuesday.

Miklós Kásler told a press conference that waiting lists had “grown extremely long” by 2010, when the Fidesz government came to power. With robust government spending, the waiting lists were cut to 26,000-28,000 people by 2019, from 70,000 in 2013, he said.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought a rise in backlogs in health care worldwide, he said.

In Hungary, the treatment of emergency cases, as well as cancer and cardiac illnesses, remained a requirement, he said.

At another press conference, Kásler said the government had spent a total 9.3 billion forints on developments at the South-Pest Centrum Hospital – National Haematology and Infectology Institute in recent years.

Kásler noted

the “unique position” of the Centrum Hospital in the region, adding that its development was “necessary and justified”.

Concerning the actual projects, the minister said the hospital’s maternity ward was now “family-friendly”: a modern diagnostics unit has been added, while the medical technology and energy systems have been upgraded. He added a database of oncology and haematology patients is under development.

Hungarian govt guarantees 24/7 health care for Ukrainian refugees

Ukrainian Refugees in Medyka at the Polish-Ukrainian Border

The Hungarian government is guaranteeing access to health care around the clock for refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine, the human resources ministry told MTI on Friday.

Mobile teams have been sent to registration points along the Ukrainian border to provide medical care, screening, coronavirus tests and, if need be, hospital care for those arriving from Ukraine.

To date nearly 100 refugees have required hospital care, mostly out-patient services. At present 14 refugees are in hospital, including nine children.

All refugees who are not vaccinated against Covid, or wish to be accommodated in a refugee centre, are tested for coronavirus and offered the jab. Those infected are quarantined or, in more serious cases, taken to hospital.

The health workers delegated by hospitals and working in 12-hour shifts are being assisted by charity organisations, the ministry said.

Hungary prepared to receive Ukrainian refugees

Viktor Orbán interview

All departments of the Ministry of Human Resources is prepared to receive refugees from Ukraine, and all necessary measures have been taken, the minister said on Monday.

Miklós Kásler told a press conference held on a different subject that preparations have been made to offer refugees the health services they need, including vaccination. Hospitals near the border with Ukraine are prepared and financing is available to provide health-care for refugees, with Hungarian service costs unaffected, he addded.

Meanwhile, the government is capping wholesale price of petrol and diesel at 480 forints (EUR 1.3) a litre from Monday, which will contribute to the more competitive operation of retail gas stations, the ministry of innovation and technology said on Monday.

The cap on retail petrol and diesel prices was introduced in November, and has been extended until May 15. The government introduced the measure to cushion the impact of high inflation.

PM Orbán: “everyone can see, they’re going backwards, not forwards”

Viktor Orbán Election Campaign Speech Part 3

Orbán said poverty in Hungary was falling while the middle class were growing. Rural developments now receive three times what the previous government spent, he added.

You can find the previous parts of Viktor Orbán’s speech HERE (part 1) and HERE (part 2).

He said a work-based economy generated money for spending. With more jobs and higher incomes, he added, taxes could be maintained at a low level, freeing up disposable income for people to consume and invest.

The prime minister said that but for global inflation, the economy would have performed even better.

But the government had kept a lid on inflation by introducing caps on the price of fuel, household utilities, interest on loans and basic foods. Family benefits, he said, would be expanded.

On the subject of the pandemic, the prime minister said Hungary had been “the first to wake up” and take measures such as forming an operative body dedicated to handling the virus, purchasing ventilators, and readying hospitals in time. Hungary was also head of the queue for procuring vaccines and the “the first to reopen the country”.

Orbán said his government had settled the salaries of doctors, abolished gratuities paid by patients, and separated private from public health care under an agreement with the Hungarian Chamber of Doctors.

Thanks to developments in the health-care industry and the domestic production of masks, ventilators and medical aids, “we’re now producing what we … may need during another epidemic,” he said.

On the subject of migration, Orbán said every day hundreds of people were attempting to force their way into Hungary. Last year 122,000 made the attempt while more than 12,000 have done so in January this year alone, he said.

The border, he said, would only be protected “as long as the current government holds power”.

Referring to “pro-migrant bureaucrats in Brussels” and the “dangerous actors of the Gyurcsány show”, Orbán insisted that the borders would be opened by them and “our grandchildren will cry … that’s if there are any left.”

The prime minister said Brussels and Hungary had different views concerning Europe’s valuable traditions, the future of nations, and the family.

Noting the referendum on child protection to be held at the same time as the general election, he said: “The father is a man, the mother is a woman, and our children won’t be left unprotected.”

Orbán spoke of “deep differences between Brussels and Hungary”, saying this was explained by the fact that Western countries had not lived through a dictatorship. “We did not just have freedom; we fought for it.”

“The Cold War was won by the Poles, the Czechs, the Hungarians, the Germans, the Bulgarians, the Romanians, the Estonians, the Latvians and the Lithuanians,” he said, adding that anti-communism and the national idea “won the Cold War by restoring the nation state”.

“But they believe their liberal democracy overcame communism … George Soros is their hero,” he said.

Orbán said Hungary’s constitutional system guaranteed the rule of law, while “for them the rule of law is a tool to mould us in their own image”. “They’re not interested facts or arguments; they’re fighting a holy war, a jihad of the rule of law.”

Accusing the left-wing administration of Budapest of creating “chaos, dirt, homelessness and traffic jams, corruption, … arrogance and laziness”, Orbán said “everyone can see, they’re going backwards, not forwards”.
