The Spanish Iberia airline has launched its first Madrid-Budapest flight, the Ambassador of Hungary to Spain welcomed the 95 passengers of the first airplane before take-off at the airport on Tuesday morning, mno.hu said.
The new flight operates between the two capitals from June 2 to the end of October, seven times a week. They don’t fly on Monday and Friday, but two flights start on Tuesday and Thursday.
On the first flight, mainly Spanish tourists traveled, but there was some who visited his/her daughter working in Budapest, and a teacher group participating in the Erasmus program also traveled in the plane. None of them knew that this was the first direct flight of the Spanish airline.
According to mno.hu, Eniko Gyori, Hungary’s ambassador in Madrid told MTI: the airline decided in favor of the flight start because of the increased demands, since more and more people are traveling between the two countries. It could be done only by low cost carrier airlines since the termination of Malev in 2012, and those who wanted a more comfortable flight, it has become possible – she added.
The ambassador hopes the flights will be so successful during the summer season, that Iberia would launch seasonal or permanent direct flights to the Hungarian capital next year too.
Alejandro González Cortés captain said the Airbus A320 operating on the Madrid-Budapest line left the factory 6 months ago, it is one of the most modern machines of the fleet, and its name is Playa de los Lances after one of the beaches in southern Spain.
Iberia also has good connections in Latin-America, so the rate of transferring and point to point passengers can be matched, mno.hu said.
Iberia was founded in 1927, and it launched the first direct flight to Budapest in 1974. They’re operating in 42 countries with 133 airplanes.
The company had, in addition to the EUR 4.2 billion revenue, an operating profit of EUR 50 million.
