According to origo.hu, the director of the Pecs zoo shot the escaped wolf, the animal rights activists now are demanding his head from the city mayor. But Miklos Szatyor could have done nothing else much – wolf trainer Zoltan Horkai says, who was freaked out by the vengeance of the laity.
Anger of people is growing due to the shot of the wolf escaped from the Pecs zoo, the Animal Protection League has already started to collect signatures in order to replace Miklos Szatyor, director of the zoo.
The petition has been signed by nearly ten thousand people, the organizers of the league and other animal rights activists ask the Mayor of Pecs to fire Szatyor.
Anyways, the wolf spent only one day at the zoo: it was arrived with its partner from Italy on October 30th, but it already escaped from his runway on Saturday morning. It tore and jumped the 2.5 meter-high electric fence.
Then the wolf wandered around Tubes, in the southern side of Mecsek, the zoo staff found there on Sunday afternoon.
The wolf was finally shot down by the director with live ammunition from about 60 meters. The director said he could not stop the animal otherwise, it behaved threatening and the colleagues with anesthetic bullets were not there. Miklos Szatyor told lives revolved in danger, since the wolf was aggressive and families were hiking in the forest, in spite of the ban.
Wolf trainer Zoltan Horkai, also known as werewolf, thinks Szatyor is right. He was freaked out because of the campaign launched against the director by the “stupid poison greens”.
Horkai said that Miklos Szatyor had turned to him first and he could not tell him any better. According to him, this wolf was a predator which become accustomed to the closeness of people and its reactions were unpredictable. He has 19 stiches in his face, because a wolf, which he cares for a long time, was biting him. The shot wolf could also have been a dominant animal which attacks everyone, if there is a way.
Zoltan Horkai was wondering what the animal rights activists would say, if the animal would have not been shot, and the wolf would attack the child of a hiking family.
He added the anesthetic bullets could not stop it either, since it takes effect 15-20 minutes later and the animal can escape smoothly. Moreover, it is not sure it survives the hit: the amount of adrenaline released in his body could crash its blood circulation.
Zsolt Pava, Mayor of Pecs told origo.hu that he relies on the zoo director, but the local government will take the necessary steps, if the inspection reveals any human error or irregularity led to the escape of the animal.
