The Ten Most Beautiful Castles On Offer In Hungary

Change language:

What a “castle” is is as difficult to define as what “old” is. Urbanista.blog.hu defined pre-war, individual buildings with own parks, built for only one family as castles. They excluded city palaces and villas, the kind or another buildings advertised as castles, and then they drew a line between castles and mansions in terms of their sizes. They classified castles as buildings which are at least 750 square meters in size.

Most people don’t even know exactly how many castles are located in Hungary, or how many are on offer. Probably because this property type doesn’t really have its own market. It’s not surprising that we don’t find any castles among the 10 most expensive Hungarian houses.

It’s amazing how big and how beautiful buildings are found in towns most of us never heard of, and that how bad conditions some of them are in. It’s also weird, but not surprising, that how awkward sometimes the advertisements of these more million HUF properties are, marked with completely random architectural styles from classicist to baroque.

Urbanista.blog.hu also mentions that realtors have an annoying habit that they try to dissemble the place of the property. It is justifiable in case of a panel flat, because obviously no one would knock on the door of every tenant of three blocks to find out who of them is selling the particular flat, but it’s different with a 1000 square meters, unique look castle. Even if the realtors tell the name of the neighboring town, this habit is simply annoying.

Here comes the ten most beautiful, most interesting castles in the compilation of urbanista.blog.hu, from the cheapest to the most expensive:

10. Perczel castle, Rózsafa – HUF 20 million

The once beautiful castle have decayed during the past century (it was built in 1913) and looks heartbreaking today. It’s worth to watch the pictures attached to the advertisement, where the building is offered in a HUF 20 million (!!) target price. The former owner possibly would be very disappointed if he knew that his castle now worth only the price of a small urban apartment.

9. Dessewffy castle, Gávavencsellő – HUF 150 million

Does the roof worth this much? The Dessewffy castle offered for HUF 150 million is not in much better condition than Perczel castle in Rózsafa, but has a newly-constructed roof. It means a lot, together with the facts that the castle is near Tokaj, and almost 1000 square meters big. However, it’s still not in a good status.

8. Serényi castle, Putnok – HUF 150 million

The residency of Serényi family in Putnok is a classicist gem even in its current state. Although everything movable were taken from its inside a long time ago, the building still keeps the XIX. century elegance in its details. It also have a newly-built roof, which will hopefully survive until the castle get a new owner.

7. Buttler castle, Erdőtelek – HUF 165 million

The roof is also in a good condition on the Buttler-castle constructed in the end of the 1800’s. Its vaulted ground floor, the paintings inside, and the formation of the driveway through the building make it interesting and unique.
