“The work of a lifetime is gone” – the heartbreaking story of a Hungarian figure skater
The Hungarian figure skater, Márk Magyar, tested positive just after arriving in Beijing for his Olympic performance, so he was sent to a quarantine hotel. He was eventually unable to do his performance and compete for his country. He then made a media statement expressing his disappointment.
Scattered dreams
The athlete says he has worked hard for many years, but especially in the last four years, to show his skills in the prestigious competition and become an Olympian. The competitor now feels that a lifetime of work has been lost due to being tested positive for the coronavirus at the Beijing Olympics. As a result, he and his partner of Russian descent, Ioulia Chtchetinina were unable to compete for Hungary during the two scheduled events on Friday and Saturday, writes szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu.
The athlete expressed that it was very painful that his dream ended in such a misfortunate way as he was so close to his goal, he even made it to Beijing. Before his departure, all his tests were negative, otherwise, he would not have been allowed to board the plane. Therefore, he had likely caught the virus while traveling.
Positive COVID-19 test
Upon his arrival, a sample was taken at Beijing Airport, and from there the Hungarian figure skater was transferred to the Olympic Village, where he waited for the result. He was later given another test and told that it was positive so he would be taken to a quarantine hotel.
The athlete has no symptoms whatsoever.
The quarantine can be lifted only if he produced two negative tests, but so far his latest test came back positive again, the sportsman said to nso.hu. The only hope left for the athlete is to be able to return with the rest of his team on Monday, as was originally planned.
His team members were tested negative
Both Márk Magyar’s coach and partner, Iulia Chtchetinin were tested negative but since they are considered close contacts, they will also have to produce two more negative tests until their departure.
The pair was sixth at the European Championships in Tallinn in January and 14th at last year’s World Championships.
