Academy Of Sciences Elects Wolf-Laureate Mathematician Laszlo Lovasz As President

Budapest, May 6 (MTI) – The Hungarian Academy of Sciences has elected Wolf-prize-winning mathematics professor Laszlo Lovasz as its new president.

Lovasz was elected to the post with 61.8 percent supporting votes in a secret ballot at the HAS’s general meeting on Tuesday, the academy said on its website.

Lovasz, 66, is best known for his work in combinatorics, for which he was awarded the Wolf Prize and the Knuth Prize in 1999. After a professorship at Yale University between 1993 and 2006, Lovasz returned to head the Mathematical Institute of Budapest’s Lorand Eotvos University.

Lovasz became a regular member of the HAS in 1985 and was elected member of the board in 2008.

He is taking over the post from Jozsef Palinkas, who served as HAS president since 2008.
