Men Handball: Szeged Reaches European Cup Final With Amazing Performance For The First Time

Szeged beat Füchse Berlin in the semi final of the EHF Cup final four. The Hungarian team controlled the match until the end and advanced to its first European cup final. With the win the streak of Germanic EHF winners for the last ten years broke, reports nso.hu.

Szeged started excellently, it took the lead in the first minute with the goal of FerencIlyés, who followed it with two scores within 7 minutes. The Hungarian team stayed ahead until the 20th minute, when Füchse have got close with the help of the first man penalty of the match (8-9). Nevertheless, Szeged soon went ahead again with the goals of Balogh and Zubai. In the last minute, a penalty was also awarded, Jonas Larholm set the half-time score (9-15).

The second part began with German dominance, the home team defended so well that Szeged could not score a single goal for 9 minutes. Ilyés and Garcia Parrondo resumed Szeged’s goals, while on the other side Jaszka and Zachrisson made sure Berlin stays close. The difference was only 2 goals, but Zubai was soon sent off Jaszka scored again and Füchse was only one goal down. The equalizing, however, was prevented by Zubai and soon the difference was 3 goals again. The German team tried hard but it could not get any closer until the end.

This meant the first time qualification for a European cup final for Szeged, says nso.hu.

Ilyés said to Digi Sport after the match: “I am very happy, this is huge for Szeged. We tried to make into a reality what we have prepared. Their strength is that Jaszka is moving their players in the middle and they score a lot of goals from that, but we defended very well against that and Mikler was great in the goal as well. Discipline was a key point today, and even I was surprised how well-disciplined were we. There were signs against Veszprém at home that the team is really together. Everyone knew that we have to play well in the final four, it is a celebration of handball. We thank to our supporters that they came with us. To play a final with a Hungarian team is fantastic. If we play well we will have a chance against anyone in the final”.
