Wednesday season 2 rumored to film in Hungary
One of the most successful series on Netflix this year was definitely Wednesday, partly directed by Tim Burton. Although the first season premiered only recently, the filmmakers are already preparing for season 2. While it has not yet been confirmed, there is a speculation that the new season could be filmed in Hungary.
Many of the scenes were shot in the neighbourhood of Hungary in Romania, where several iconic buildings of Romania were used as the main locations of the series. These buildings included, for example, the Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, which served as the Nevermore Academy, the most important location of the story, or a building of the Bucharest University of Technology, which appears as the first school of the main character. Transtelex, however, has recently spotted a rumour in the Romanian media saying that the producers are looking for a new location for the next season.
The news portal reports that the production would be moved from Romania to Bulgaria or Hungary. The report reveals that the alleged change of location was decided by the producers for a number of reasons. It is possible that the decision was made primarily for financial reasons. This means that Romania did not offer sufficiently favourable financial conditions for filming. Although they do have a framework law that allows them to support productions made there in order to enhance the country’s image, it is not currently in force.
Another possible reason for the change of location is that Romanian film companies have consistently overpriced the equipment they offered for rent. As the news portal reports, there were times when they had to rent cameras for USD 3,000 instead of the usual USD 300.
Why Hungary?
Hungary may have been chosen as a possible location for the filming because of the more favourable financial conditions. As another news portal, index.hu, points out,
Hungarian studios are popular destinations for foreign productions for several reasons.
This means that Hungary offers favourable tax conditions to foreign film companies. In addition, the work of Hungarian film professionals is recognised worldwide in the film industry, index.hu reports.
Hungarian ties
Given the Hungarian ties to the first season alone, there is a good chance that the shooting of next season will actually be moved to Hungary. So far, there have been several successful cooperations between the makers and Hungarian artists. One of these Hungarian ties is related to a Hungarian girl Karina Váradi, who plays the young Wednesday.
Only a few people know that Hungarian musicians were responsible for the soundtrack of Tim Burton’s hit series. Index.hu recently reported that Burton’s production company had hired the Hungarian band Budapest Scooring to play the music for the series. The band has already assisted in other successful film productions, which we reported about last year HERE.
After all, there is chance that the shooting of Wednesday will continue in Hungary, following the show’s previous collaborations with Hungarian artists.
