Vermont’s first female and openly gay representative is of Hungarian origin
Becca Balint won yesterday Vermont’s only seat in the House of Representatives of the US Congress in the midterms. She is of Hungarian origin. Her father left Hungary after the lost 1956 revolution and war for freedom.
Becca Balint served as the chairwoman of the Vermont Senate until yesterday when she won the state’s only seat in the House of Representatives. She used to work as a teacher before. Her grandfather was murdered during the Holocaust. Her dad left Hungary in 1957, after the lost revolution and freedom fight of 1956. Becca Balint was born in the USA in 1968, portfolio.hu wrote.
She will be the first female and openly gay person to represent the state in Congress. And she promised to remain a progressive Democrat in her victory address last night.
“We’re fighting for climate action, we’re fighting for universal healthcare, …, for reproductive rights, for the safety of our trans and queer neighbours, for racial equity, …, for a nation finally as good as promised”, she said.
Vermont was the only American state up until now that never elected a woman to Congress before.
