Plane delivery delay, ticket cancellations: What’s next for Wizz Air’s long-haul flights?

Wizz Air announced before that they would launch long-haul flights with their new Airbus A321XLR. The first of those new planes should take off on 31 March and carry passengers between London Gatwick and Jeddah, Mecca Province, Saudi Arabia. The airline already sold a lot of tickets, but they had to cancel the reservations of multiple passengers.

According to Budflyer, a Hungarian air travel-focused Facebook page, the debut of Wizz Air’s brand new Airbus A321XLR planes had to be postponed due to a delivery delay. The Hungarian low-cost airline’s first long-haul flight should take off on 31 March from London-Gatwick, but that will not happen because Wizz Air did not get its first A321XLR.

However, the airline decided not to postpone the first long-haul flight. Instead, they decided to serve passengers on the first 11 flights with Airbus A321neo planes.

Wizz Air’s new long-haul flight also announced

A321neo planes have a lower range to fly between London and Jeddah without stopping. As a result, they can carry fewer passengers on board. Consequently, Wizz Air had to cancel the booking of multiple passengers on the route.

Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s foreign minister, announced that Wizz Air would open a new route between Budapest and India’s Mumbai (Bombay) at the end of this year. According to the plans, an A321XLR plane will serve the passengers on the route. However, the airline has not yet announced the Budapest debut of the new plane type or its first route from the Hungarian capital. Of course, it is not unusual in Hungary for political actors (ministers, secretaries or even the prime minister) to announce economic, and industrial developments or even new flights. Szijjártó said then that the flight to India would take approximately 8 hours.
