Deals struck with four US firms on Hungary investments
Budapest (MTI) – Agreements have been signed with four US companies on investment projects in Hungary, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday.
The projects will lead to 1,700-1,800 jobs created in the IT sector, vehicle industry and services, Szijjarto told public news channel M1 after his recent visit to the United States. America is Hungary’s second largest investor after Germany, he noted, adding that more than 1,600 US companies employ 91,000 people in Hungary with investments totalling 9 billion dollars.
He added that in New York he held talks with the UN deputy secretary-general about the Syria conflict.
Szijjártó also asked the UN to speed up a process to lift the secrecy on documents related to Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.
Commenting on a recent visit to Moscow, he said the Hungarian and Russian sides made it clear that they would keep to their scheduled obligations in connection with the Paks nuclear power station investment project. Szijjarto reiterated that from Hungary’s point of view, the Paks project will be the “deal of the century” because electricity generated from nuclear energy in Hungary will increase from 43 percent to 60 percent of the total and many thousand jobs will be created.
On the subject of Visegrad Four cooperation, he said it has become a grouping of global significance. The V4’s proposal for the migrant situation is clear: Europe’s vulnerability must be addressed, he said. If this is not possible at the southern borders of Greece, then the right conditions must be secured at Greece’s northern borders, Szijjarto said, adding that an estimated 6,000-10,000 migrants are projected to enter Europe daily in the spring.
