Hungary ‘serious’ about developing defence industry, says economy ministry official
Budapest (MTI) – Hungary has “comprehensive plans” to develop again a defence industry, which “would be impossible without state support”, an economy ministry deputy state secretary said on Tuesday.
Presenting the government’s new industrial strategy at a conference held at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Áron Márk Lenner said that in light of the increased global and regional security threats, developing the country’s armed and police forces and reducing import dependency have become key goals for Hungary.
Developing an arms industry could even create new export opportunities in the medium term, Lenner said.
Economy Minister Mihály Varga announced last week that the government was putting together and inter-ministerial committee to create the conditions for Hungary to enter the arms industry.
