Budapest, May 23 (MTI) – Altogether 32 Hungarian citizens and their close relatives have been rescued from crisis-ridden Yemen via Sudan over the recent period.
Hungary’s honorary consul in Sudan, Yousif Ahmed Yousif Eltay, had a lion’s share in the evacuation effort, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Saturday.
The consul helped the families to leave for Khartoum, then to return to Budapest, covering their costs of accommodation in Sudan from his own pocket, it said.
His efforts and sacrifice “went far beyond the duties arising from his office”, the ministry said.
In recognition of his merits, Peter Szijjarto, the foreign minister, has promoted Eltay to honorary consul-general, it said.
Shiite rebels have been fighting against the forces of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who lives in exile, since January this year.
