According to data from autopalyamatrica.hu, the popularity of county vignettes has skyrocketed, mainly due to the fact that the 10-day vignette has become proportionally more expensive in recent years. According to the professional portal, the introduction of the one-day vignette next March will not change this trend either, as

the D1 category for cars (and motorcycles) will cost HUF 5150 (EUR 13.54), while the 10-day will cost HUF 6400 (EUR 16.83) and the annual one for one county will cost HUF 6600 (EUR 17.35) in 2024.

The price of the daily vignette is 9% of the annual vignette price (HUF 57,260 / EUR 150), the maximum set by the EU. According to the statement, the price of the one-day vignette is in line with the practice in neighbouring countries.

More toll roads

In Hungary, 230 more kilometres of roads will become toll roads next year, bringing the total number of kilometres on which a vignette will be required to be used to 2,000.

The entire length of the M0, the M44 from the Lakitelek/Tiszakécske junction to Békéscsaba, the M30 between Miskolc north and south, the M6 between Bátaszék and the M6-M60 junction, the M4 between Jászberény and Abony north, and Abony east and Szolnok west, and the M76 from Balatonszentgyörgy to Keszthely-Fenékpuszta are expected to be toll roads. This also means that next year, there will be toll roads in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Békés counties.

Hungarian roads are far superior to Austria’s, I am sure our Politicians would say! You get what you pay for…

Re the jump in demand – wasn’t there COVID or something to skew the figures in 2020? Or was I dreaming?

  2. Putting tolls on the entire length of the M0 is going to drive traffic into alternative city roads causing more congestion and pollution. Arpad bridge will become overloaded if use of Megyeri bridge at the north end will require a vignette.
