Only young people living in Ireland and Cyprus precede Hungary in those sorrowful statistics, based on the latest survey of Eurofound Research Foundation’s latest survey.
According to the shocking results detailed by G7, 42% of young Hungarians planned to move abroad in three years in 2023. Another 11% “would like to” leave Hungary. In Ireland, that figure is 35 and 26 pc, while in Cyprus 50 and 5 pc.
In Hungary, 25% of the 15-29-year-old people struggle to make ends meet from their salary. Based on that, young people in Hungary are in a worse position in nine and a more favourable position in 17 member states. And why would they leave Hungary? According to the survey, the main reasons are the depressing Hungarian public life and the low living standard.
According to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, 2021 was the year of trend change. That was the first year after the COVID-19 pandemic when more people left Hungary than returned.

Of NO surprise to this commentator.
It is FACT.
What is of greater concern is the ageing factor of Hungarians.
We are, through declining birth rate – higher deaths than birth, that has been the pattern or TREND of the 14 years, this Orban – Fidesz Government of Hungary have been in POWER.
The YOUNG of voting age, there simple is not enough in percentage of our population, to “Throw Out” the Orban -Fidesz Government.
It REQUIRES an awakening of the OLDER generations of Hungarians, to VOTE for the “removal” of the Orban – Fidesz Government, to ensure they are REMOVED, for the FUTURE of Hungary.
The YOUNG will continue to leave Hungary, in the Political & Economic environment, that will WORSEN in Hungary.
Opportunities for the YOUNG in Hungary continue to DEMINISH.
The POWER to bring about NEEDED change in Hungary – is a NUMBER’s Game, being a combination of the youth and “older” generation, effecting CHANGE through voting numbers.
It CAN and MUST happen, if Hungary are to have a FUTURE.
We have been bought to our knee’s in the millions in Hungary.
Hungary, in millions have been FAILED by the Orban – Fidesz Government that have DELIVERED us as a country to the cataclysmic MESS we are today.
Can – what is the factual picture of life in Hungary today and into the future, under the Orban – Fidesz Government worsen ?
Certainly, sooner than later.
Solidarity – the YOUNG of Hungary, with the older generation, the POWER to bring about change by the way and for whom we Vote is a MUST, if we Hungary – individually and as a country is to have a FUTURE.
If I remember correctly way before Orba’n was the ruler, birth rates were already dropping because people had too good a lifestyle and said that having children would tie them down and cramp their style.
However, if young adults are seriously wanting to leave they had better have skills to offer other coutries. I can remember watching UT vedios of a couple of men in their early 30-s maybe who moved to Western Canada, job was driving big rigs for which there is always a demand. Like healthcare, with same very long shifts so easy to make money when you work over 65 hrs a week. But still not quite enough to buy a home in a good school district. Which I assume is what they’d want since they’d now not have such limited choices for life advancement.
The grass is always greener… If you’ve only known Hungary, with a smattering of short trips elsewhere, your whole life, the siren call of distant lands where the salaries are higher is very appealing.
The reality of actually living in big towns and cities in Western Europe, however, is very, very different than what they imagine. I’ve lived in 15 countries and close to 40 different cities, including many in Britain, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain; and I wouldn’t choose them over Budapest ever.
More importantly, Budapest must NOT become like any of them. And THAT is what voting next weekend is about!
This from the ByLine Times explains the issue of UK’s populist politics vs. reality of workforce ageing and decline with more retirees…
‘The narrowness of political arguments over migration show how neither party is publicly grappling with the magnitude of this shift. The working population threatens to shrink while demands for health and social care for older people rise. An aging nation can either supplement its population through immigration, or pare back aspects of its economy and public services to reflect a dwindling labour force.’
Issue is that elections are dominated by ‘low info’ types and/or pensioners….good to hold power, but neither budget sustainability nor the future….
Why , and we are moving, both with University Degrees, late 20’s, from Hungary, our country of birth, besides professional opportunities and higher wages, an Economy, that is falling apart, the “shift” from a Democracy, to Socialism, that will be a Dictatorship, better standards of Health Care, school education standard for our “little one” and the cost of living in line with Budapest, Hungary.
Interest Rates 3% in Spain, as opposed to 9% in Hungary.
CNN on Saturday evening, time spent by an Financial Expert, discussed the Hungarian situation on HIGH interest rates in comparison to “other” European country’s and the impact it was having that in her opinion will get worse in Hungary, and “burden” it to be a horrific problem, for the already troubled Hungarian economy.
Quality of our Lives, our career futures, wages and our daughters future, the lights definitely burn brighter than in Hungary, for our FUTURE.
I totally agree with you, Michael. I have the same experiences as you. A lot of young Hungarians are deceived by decades of lies about the West as being the promised land that will take away all your problems. I saw how many Hungarians ended up in Western Europe. A lot of Hungarians are blind to what a beautiful country Hungary is and all the possibilities you have if you want to see them. Of course, I will not deny that we have some major problems to solve, and they must be addressed asap.
Open borders between low income and high income countries was and is an insane and suicidal policy in the first place for many reasons.
It was clear from the beginning that it was on purpose to end the homogeneous nation states of Europe, because the “European project” aka EU was from its inception a federal and political project. Take, for example, a good look at the “founding fathers”.
A HUXIT and dismantling the present EU is the only solution at the end!
