6 things you should know before coming to Budapest
Barbara Litzlfellner has published several posts on matadornetwork.com about our capital city and the life here, in the heart of Central Europe. She recently came out with a new article, which is not an ordinary approach towards a touristic topic – she collected six things that all travellers should understand before coming to Budapest.
We can run into frustrating situations caused by tourists in the city centre every day. For instance, you might be in a rush, but there’s a group of sightseeing tourists in your way, or you might want to start a conversation with a friendly foreigner in your favourite pub about which sights he/she likes the most, but the answer consists of three ruin pubs and some discos. Barbara’s post defends the capital city and its dwellers as she asks everyone to respect each other through six points.
Not being in control of your body liquids is not sexy
Unfortunately some parts of the downtown area stink because some people think that public toilets equal doorways. The author is pissed off by having to slalom around mysterious puddles – not knowing if it’s water, pee or maybe vomit – in the morning on your way to work. She suggests either drinking less or popping into a close-by bar.
We don’t want to be part of your stag parties
Budapest has become a popular destination for stag parties which come with funny boys trying to convince you to take part in their games. But if you see a group of girls in a bar, minding their own business and not paying attention to you, then you can take it that they definitely don’t want to be involved in stag games. The writer finds it hard to escape the dozens of stag parties, she even recommends places that refuse to let bachelor parties in.
Keep your shirt on
Budapest summers can get quite hot but it’s still not a reason to wander around the city half naked and smile at people who are having lunch, dinner or anything. If you wouldn’t show up topless in a restaurant at home, then why would you do that here?
Budapest is not a brothel
There are specific places all over the world where there’s a good chance that you’ll get lucky. However, going up to women standing on the sidewalk by themselves for any reason and trying to seduce them with dirty talk is a very unpleasant and inappropriate way of flirting with someone. Women don’t like it, not even in Budapest.
Your new favourite bar is beneath someone’s bedroom
The city’s 7th district in known for its endless selection of bars, which are open 24/7. Even though they are perfect gaieties, remember that your favourite party district is also someone else’s home, who want to sleep at night, because they have to go to their non-party job the next day. So if you happen to think that it is a good idea to loudly howl the verses of Barbie Girl while going from one bar to another, please do reconsider.
Budapest is not just a party city, it’s full of history
The capital city of Hungary has a uniquely rich and diverse history and has been the home of countless world-class composers, writers, scientists and inventors. Barbara believes that it would be a pity to miss out on exploring the Hungarian culture and history. She recommends visiting the Opera House, the House of Terror, or just strolling along the streets while admiring the fascinating architecture.
