Two Hungarian films take main prizes at the Cinequest Film Festival

The prizes for best drama and best comedy were both taken by Hungarian productions on the closing night of the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California, hvg.hu reports. The winners were selected from among 132 films from 50 countries.

Roland Vranik’s film, The Citizen was awarded the prize for Best Narrative Feature Film in drama category. The film is a poignant love story which features amateur actors and uses minimalist techniques and humour to portray what it’s like to be an immigrant in Hungary.

Roland Vranik’s film has recently won the prize for best script in the Directors’ Week programme at the Fantasporto Film Festival in Portugal. The film was made with the support of the Hungarian National Film Fund, and the script was written by director Roland Vranik and Iván Szabó, who is known for Vespa and Land of Storms.

The jury of the Cinequest Film Festival also awarded Anca Miruna Lazarescu’s That Trip We Took With Dad. The German-Romanian-Hungarian-Swedish coproduction won the prize for Best Narrative Feature Film in the comedy selection. The Eastern European road trip film was also supported by the Hungarian National Film Fund, and several Hungarians were involved in its making, including composer Ferenc Darvas, whose music for the film was awarded at the Munich Film Festival last year.
