Ukrainians vandalised a Hungarian flag in Transcarpathia?
Budapest, April 6 (MTI) – The government deeply condemns whoever it was who vandalised a Hungarian flag at a cross on the hill of Berehove (Beregszász) in western Ukraine, the government commissioner in charge of Transcarpathia (Kárpátalja) said on Thursday.
It is not yet known if the vandalism was motivated by nationalism or incitement to hatred, István Grezsa said in a statement. He expressed hope that it constituted an isolated case and was not related to recent political developments that involved harassment of minorities in Ukraine.
He said ethnic Hungarians can rest assured that the Hungarian government will continue to stand up for their interests, he said.
Respect for each other’s culture and identity is a basic condition for peaceful coexistence, he said, adding that Hungary always shows respect for Ukraine and expects the same in return.
