Vona advocates “peace, neutrality” in Ukraine conflict
Budapest (MTI) – Radical nationalist Jobbik leader Gabor Vona has called on Hungary’s political parties to “demonstrate peace and neutrality” and warned against siding with either Russia or the United States in connection with the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Vona insisted that the Ukraine situation was “part of a geo-political fight” between Russia and the US, and raised concern that Hungary could be involved in a possible armed conflict.
Vona said it was regrettable that both the European Union and NATO are “playing music by the United States”.
Hungary has no reason to participate in a military conflict, Vona said. “No international agreement could overwrite the Hungarian people’s rightful desire for peace and neutrality,” he argued.
Vona said that Hungary was already “up to the waist” in the conflict, being a NATO member, having voiced support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but also for its commitment to participate in the protection of the airspace in the Baltic states. In case of an armed conflict Hungary could be a hotspot, and “it would not be good if Hungary’s Gripens found themselves facing Russian MiG fighters,” he added.
