Are you a good citizen?Find out what do Hungarians think!
TÁRKI Social Reseach Institute’s new poll says, it is the honourable and the politically active people of the country who are considered ”good citizens”, although 10 years ago the public opinion was different, zipp.hu reports.
The Internaional Social Survey Programme (ISSP) gathers data from 53 countries regarding different thematic topics since 1984. In Hungary, TÁRKI performed the survey ’Citizenship II.’ in June, 2014. The first research had been done in 2004, and during the 10 years between the two data collectings, the importance of several values has changed.
The 2014 survey shows, that Hungarians think there are three important factors that decide whether a person is a good citizen or not: respecting the law and paying taxes, participation in politics (voting), and postmodern values, such as tolerance, helping others and civil activities. The least important characteristics, according to respondents, is taking part in a social or political organizations and volunteering in a foreign country.
The data from 2004 shows that Hungarian society considered conscious costumers and those taking part in a social or political organization good citizens. The characteristics regarding political activity were wider in the 2004 survey, while uncorrupted taxpayers turned up less frequently in he answers than in 2014.
