Russian president phones Hungarian PM, Serbian President on post-South Stream cooperation
Budapest (MTI) – Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone with the Hungarian prime minister and Serbian president on energy cooperation opportunities after the cancellation of the South Stream gas pipeline project, the Kremlin’s press office said on Sunday.
Putin, Hungary’s Viktor Orban and Serbia’s Tomislav Nikolic also discussed bilateral matters, a statement from the Kremlin said, without disclosing any further details.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the evening of Dec. 1 that the South Stream pipeline project was being scrapped because of opposition in Europe.
The pipeline would have delivered Russian gas to Europe via the Black Sea, bypassing Ukraine.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed for MTI that Orban had spoken on the phone with Putin about energy cooperation between Hungary and Russia.
