DK calls for independent review of fostered jobs scheme
Budapest (MTI) – The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has called for an independent review of the fostered jobs scheme and an assessment by an ad-hoc parliamentary committee of its efficacy.
Head of the party’s working team for social affairs, Tibor Zaveczki, said on Wednesday that the mayor of Gyongyfa in Baranya County in southern Hungary resigned recently, saying that the government’s jobs scheme had created senseless tasks and had forced local council leaders to engage in lies.
“The corrupt government is forcing mayors to work in a corrupt system,” Zaveczki said. He added that the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ research team on labour rights would be suitable for carrying out a review of the scheme and revealing any irregularities.
The ruling Fidesz party insisted that “if it were up to the left wing, people who want to work and are able to do so would be kept unemployed, receiving monthly 28,000 forints in benefits.” Yet, thanks to the fostered job scheme, some 250,000 long-term job-seekers can work, make money and learn a profession, it said.
Fidesz’s aim is to achieve full employment because “only work can lead the way out of poverty,” the statement said. Experience from hundreds of local councils have shown that there is no town or village in Hungary where there is no work to do, and few mayors fail to make the fostered jobs scheme useful to the community, it added.
