Hungary asks Sweden to reconsider immigration request of mentally impaired woman

Riga, March 6 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has asked his Swedish counterpart for a “humanitarian solution” to the case of Hungarian Fruzsina Wilhelm, who is facing deportation from Sweden.

During a meeting in Riga on Friday, Szijjarto asked Margot Wallstrom to consider a solution through which Wilhelm could stay with her aunt in Sweden.

Hungary is ready to engage in talks regarding the financial, technical or legal aspects of this case, Szijjarto said. Wallstrom replied that she had no real influence on the case but promised that she would monitor the developments.

Online news portal index.hu reported on Tuesday that the 20-year-old woman with a mental disability was an orphan who lived with her aunt in Malmo for the past two years. The Swedish immigration office wants to send her back to Hungary because they consider it too big a burden on the country to pay for her living costs. Wilhelm’s request for a residence permit was turned down in 2014 and she was asked to present her return flight ticket at the office. She currently receives disability allowance of 1,550 Swedish crowns a month (EUR 168).
