LMP calls on government to re-establish ties with West instead of ‘eastern opening’
The opposition LMP party calls on the government to re-establish relations with the western countries instead of further promoting its foreign policy of “opening to the east”, a party official said on Saturday.
Foreign ministry officials have held 77 high-level talks with leaders of communist countries since Viktor Orbán’s government came to power seven years ago, LMP board member Péter Ungár told a press conference.
“This is way more than the number of meetings held with officials of western countries Hungary has a de facto economic and military cooperation with,” he said.
Ungár called the agreements signed by the foreign ministry with its eastern partners “a communications trick”.
“Hungarian people have not benefitted from these agreements at all, the only purpose of them was to give the foreign minister an excuse to travel around the world,” he said.
