Students are demonstrating against the withdrawal of certain faculty programs
ELTE students are afraid of the withdrawal of the social sciences, after on Friday they had found out that the government is planning to withdraw some bachelor’s programs. Students think that this will jeopardize the whole Faculty of Social Sciences; therefore, they organized a forum for Monday evening.
A student forum was being organized on Monday evening by the students of ELTE’s Faculty of Social Sciences after they has found out that the government is planning to withdraw some programs. According to the ministry’s proposal, the international studies program will only be on the Master’s program.
According to Abcúg, the social sciences program will be closed altogether. The students, who organize the forum, think that this will jeopardize the whole Faculty as more than 60% of the income comes after these two program’s students who pay the study fee. They afraid that if they close down this two programs than the remained three programs will be in danger too: the applied economics, the sociology and the social work.
One of the organizers of the forum said that the teachers are supporting their movements and they are trying to get help from other universities who are involved. Students demand the proposal to be withdrawn by the Ministry of Human Resources, to share their reasons behind the decision and to assure the autonomy of higher education.
The government said in its announcement that the reason behind the withdrawal of certain programs is ‘ to get balance between the programs and the expectations of the economy and society in order to improve the education, the employment and the economy’s competitiveness. ‘
