V-Day – Szijjarto calls for east-west cooperation in Moscow
Moscow (MTI) – Constructive and civilised cooperation between eastern and western Europe lies in the interest of the whole continent, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said after attending a victory-day commemoration with several EU counterparts in Moscow on Saturday.
“History has taught us that Europe can only be strong and secure if its eastern and western parts cooperate in a civilised, pragmatic way, on the basis of mutual respect,” he said, adding that the soonest possible peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and observance of the Minsk agreement by all parties would be preconditions for that.
On Friday Szijjarto attended a meeting of 15 foreign ministers hosted by his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
On Saturday, along with the Slovenian, French and Italian foreign ministers, he attended a wreath-laying ceremony in Alexander Garden and a state reception in the Kremlin.
Szijjarto, similarly to his EU counterparts, stayed away from the military parade marking the 70th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.
Szijjarto said that they visited Moscow to pay tribute to the victims of the Second World War.
