EHF Women’s Final Four: less than two weeks until the great final in Budapest
The coming of May means one thing to handball fans: EHF Women’s Final Four in Budapest. This year the great final is going to be organised on the second weekend of May in Papp László Budapest Sports Arena.
On Saturday (May 12, 2018) semifinals will take place, while on Sunday (May 13, 2018) the teams will fight for the gold and the bronze medals. In this season Győr, Rostov-Don, Vardar and București were the four best teams in the champions league. Therefore they will participate in the final four. Firstly, București and Győr are playing against each other. Secondly, Vardar and Rostov-Don are fighting to get to the final. Eventually, the winners and the losers of the matches will play against each other.
Győr is said to be the most likely to win the final four, as the Hungarian team has home advantage and they are also the defenders of the title.
On the other hand, several key players of Győr are injured. Their most significant loss is the Norwegian centre backcourt Nora Mørk, who got hurt in February, and will be returning in August. Zsuzsanna Tomori, one of the most excellent right backcourt, has also been injured for a long time. None of them will be able to play in May. Another loss is Cornelia Nycke Groot. The Dutch player’s injury is not as severe as Tomori’s or Mørk’s, so Groot might be able to play in the final four.
Despite the injuries, Győr showed a great play against Buducnost Podgorica in the quarterfinals, where Anita Görbicz, the all-time great player of Hungarian handball was able to play her best, and lead her team to two victories in a row.
Many questions come up in connection with the EHF Women’s Final Four, but there is only one, that matters: who is going to lift the trophy on Sunday? In less than three weeks’ time, we will know the answer.
