Prominent geneticist Endre Czeizel dies at 80

Budapest, August 10 (MTI) – Prominent Hungarian geneticist Endre Czeizel died at age 80 after a long illness early on Monday, his family told MTI.

Czeizel was a specialist in genetics counselling to families wanting children and his televised lectures on the topic made him popular among millions of viewers in Hungary. He worked out a family planning model in the 1980s that helped the birth of more than 75,000 “Czeizel babies”.

His main areas of research were epidemiology, prenatal diagnosis and inheritance in genetic disorders. He was the first to prove the beneficial effects of vitamins in embryonic development.
