Fidesz: “Migration emergency” calls for deploying military
Budapest, September 9 (MTI) – Using the military in the “current migration emergency” is necessary and in line with the constitution, Lajos Kosa, an MP for ruling Fidesz, said after a session of parliament’s defence committee on Wednesday.
Kosa said that due to the refugee crisis, countries such as Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Slovakia are also reaching out to their militaries for help. This however does not threaten public safety, Kosa said, arguing that the army’s deployment is meant to protect the public. He said that “contrary to what the Socialists and the Liberals envision, soldiers will not be shooting migrants at the border.”
Adam Mirkoczki of radical nationalist Jobbik voiced support for a relevant amendment saying that a need for military support was “obvious”. He said there was no “right solution” in the current situation but “the worst solution would be to allow anyone to cross the border as they please”.
Deputies representing the opposition Socialist, Democratic Coalition, and Egyutt parties, however, said that the motion was “unnecessary and unconstitutional” and insisted that the police and the immigration office could handle the situation. Deploying armed soldiers would be “especially worrying,” they added. Tamas Harangozo of the Socialists said his party would not rule out supporting the bill after further talks.
