Attention: Military vehicles to appear in Budapest for Defence Centre event

Budapest military vehicles Bálna Defence Centre

Military equipment from the Hungarian Defence Forces is expected to be seen near the Bálna Defence Centre in Budapest on Thursday afternoon. The vehicles are being transported to the Bálna for the launch of a new military-themed sports reality show, the Ministry of Defence (HM) announced on Wednesday.

According to the statement, brief appearances of military vehicles, increased noise levels, and temporary restrictions lasting up to 30 minutes should be expected in the area around the Bálna Defence Centre on Thursday between 3:20 PM and 4:00 PM, as well as during a rehearsal earlier in the day.

The military convoy will travel along the Pest embankment, from the northern side of Liberty Bridge to the Bálna, escorted by military police. The ministry urged the public to approach this route with heightened caution. The military equipment, including Gidrán armoured vehicles, will depart from the Mária Terézia Barracks at 9:30 AM and head to the Bálna Defence Centre. The vehicles are expected to leave downtown Budapest, and subsequently the city, in the evening, the statement added.

Massive scandal: stolen Hungarian military data still being auctioned on the Dark Web

defense forces Hungarian military data

Hackers continue to auction Hungarian military data stolen from the state-owned Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) server on the Dark Web.

According to Népszava, which cited information from a security expert, although details of the bidding are not publicly available, the expert confirmed that the stolen Hungarian military data remains in circulation on the Dark Web. There is no information regarding whether any bids have been placed for the documents.

The fate of the stolen Hungarian military data remains uncertain

The Inc. Ransomware hacker group attacked the OTP server in December. During the attack, the hackers encrypted the stored data and stole over one terabyte of information. Leaked screenshots reveal that the stolen materials include defence procurement documents, organisational Hungarian military data, and Hungarian force development programme records.

The attackers initially demanded $5 million from the Hungarian government to return the stolen information. However, after the government – presumably – refused to pay, the hackers launched an auction in late November with an opening bid of $1 million. The current status of the Hungarian military data auction and its duration remain unknown.

What could happen to the data?

Experts suggest that hackers typically attempt to sell stolen information for up to a year. If they fail to secure a buyer, they may publish or make the data available online. Such a move would pose significant security risks, particularly for sensitive materials containing details of Hungarian military procurement and force development plans.

Background to the attack

The Inc. Ransomware group’s origins remain unknown. However, based on their activities to date, they are believed to be a well-organised, international hacking group. The attack on the UBÜ was first exposed in December when the hackers released two dozen screenshots on the Dark Web, which experts interpreted as evidence of their possession of Hungarian military documents.

DK calls for national security committee meeting

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has called for a meeting of parliament’s national security committee to discuss “the sale of Hungarian military secrets”, Ágnes Vadai, DK’s deputy group leader, announced on Tuesday.

According to press reports, “confidential military information stolen from the Defence Procurement Agency’s website is still being sold online,” Vadai said. She accused the government of failing to address “a matter involving grave national security risks”.

The committee meeting aims to investigate “government errors, efforts to recover the data, and whether the government has contacted the authorities of other countries” in relation to the security breach, she added.

Hungarian Defence Minister: 2024 showed ‘importance of peace, security, defence’

hungary defense forces

“This year has taught us the importance of peace, security and defence,” Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in a video on Facebook on Monday.

Procurement of the Carl Gustaf M4 armoured personnel carriers closed

The Hungarian Defence Forces have taken delivery of all Carl Gustaf M4 hand-held anti-tank guns under a contract with SAAB BOFORS Dynamics, Minister of Defence Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said on Friday. The new equipment is intended to replace the Soviet RPG -7 type anti-tank grenade launchers that have been in use for decades.

The Minister of Defence said that another successful project under the Defence and Military Development Programme had been completed, as the delivery of the last HEAT 751 grenades completed the procurement of the Carl Gustaf M4 anti-tank grenades.

The Carl Gustaf M4 is the Swedish military industry’s most successful portable armoured vehicle, with different versions of the grenade launcher being used by the armed forces of more than forty countries. Five different types of grenades for the weapon have been procured for Hungary, which can be used to attack buildings, enemy’s living forces and military equipment, the Minister added.

Thanks to its modern guidance equipment, which can be used at any time of day, it can be fired accurately in a variety of environmental conditions and combat situations: against targets stationary up to 1,000 metres and moving up to about 400 metres. It can fire smoke and destructive shells at a range of one kilometre and, with laser guidance, can hit a target at a range of two kilometres,” said Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky. Carl Gustaf M4 anti-tank missiles are compatible with military development plans and allow for agile and effective deployment, contributing to the development of fire support capabilities for land troops.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky said a series of “bad decisions” had brought Europe closer and closer to the war, and the consequences of migration “are increasingly unbearable in European metropolises”. “Hungary is consistently protecting itself from migration and from being dragged into the war. We raise our voices for peace and ceasefire every day, and we have also strengthened our defence capabilities,” he said.

He said the armed forces had conducted successful recruiting campaigns, training, and exercises and had procured the “most modern defense equipment” in 2024. In 2025, it will continue to purchase aircraft and helicopters, develop air defence capabilities and continue recruiting, Defence Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

“We are confident that with President Trump’s inauguration, the war will end and we will have peace in Europe and with our families, ” said Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

Peace requires strength, Hungarian defence minister says in Bahrain

Conflicts across the world pose a great security challenge for Hungary, the defence minister said on Sunday, and noted the increased significance of dialogue.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky attended the 20th Regional Security Conference in Bahrain, where he presented the Hungarian position calling for a ceasefire and peace talks in the war in Ukraine.

The war must be stopped and peace achieved, the minister said. “Peace requires strength; we keep working on it,” he added.

Bahrein important pro-peace partner of Hungary, says minister

Hungary has confirmed its dedication to its pro-peace partner, Bahrein, the defence ministry said on Friday.

The ministry cited Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky saying after bilateral talks with Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa that cooperation was needed to handle global and regional challenges. The statement added that this was the first occasion that a Hungarian defence minister had paid an official visit to Bahrein.

The minister said that ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world posed security challenges, and Hungary’s position was that Europe’s stability is unimaginable without the stability of the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa). As a result, it is important to develop closer cooperation for handling global and regional challenges, he added.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that Hungary was committed to ensuring the stability of the MENA region. “For this purpose, we are continually increasing our presence in the region, and we cooperate with the countries that are open to stability and partnership, such as Bahrein,” he said. “We greatly appreciate the efforts by Gulf States to strengthen the stability of the Middle East,” he added.

He also said that “the cooperation between our countries is key not only for regional but also global security,” “We aim to further expand bilateral relations, with special regard to economic, security and humanitarian cooperation,” he added.

“Hungary and Bahrein as members of the global pro-peace majority, give priority to dialogue, cooperation and peacefully settling conflicts,” he said. “The intensifying competition between great powers threatens with the re-emergence of blocs in the world. We were in agreement that this could be counterbalanced with effective cooperation based on mutual respect and building connections,” he said.

The Training Headquarters of the Territorial Defence and Military Supplementary Headquarters of the Hungarian Defence Forces has developed a training system for reserve riflemen consisting of 7 thematic modules.

The three-year program includes basic, intermediate, and advanced levels, with 48 hours of complex training at each level. The modules were designed with attention to detail to reflect real life in the field, honvedelem.hu said.

At the end of November, at the end of the Combat 1 module, the training site of the Kőrös Hill firing and training range provided a real-life environment for the reserve soldiers from the various field regiments participating in the training. They spent the night in cold tents and the day in the trenches, where food was delivered to the troops by drone, reminiscent of a battlefield.

Hungarian army chief of staff Böröndi visited Hungarian troops serving in Lebanon

Hungarian army chief visited Hungarian soldiers serving in Lebanon

Hungarian soldiers serving abroad deserve recognition for performing their duties successfully, while Hungary is committed to maintaining its contribution to the UN peacekeeping missions in the future, Chief of Staff Colonel General Gábor Böröndi said after being briefed on the security situation in Cyprus and Lebanon by the army’s commander, Zoltán Kaszab.

Böröndi, who served in Cyprus in 1997-98, said Hungarian soldiers were serving in an exemplary way at UN headquarters in Nicosia and were making a big contribution towards ensuring the conflict moved towards a resolution, “though this takes time”, according to a ministry statement.

Meanwhile, at the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, Lebanon, the Hungarian chief of staff met Hungarian commanders.

He noted that Hungarian soldiers had recently spent more than 600 hours in a shelter in Lebanon, “a sign of quite how dangerous the place they are serving in is”, adding that morale was good and the soldiers appreciated the care of their superiors and the gifts, including packages sent by their loved ones, that have been sent to them ahead of the upcoming holidays.

The soldiers serving in Lebanon deserved special respect, he said, noting they were working in “an extremely complex and challenging environment” in the midst of the armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which is currently subject to a ceasefire.

Böröndi also talked with the Lebanese army chief, Lieutenant General Joseph Aoun. The Hungarian Defence Forces have been participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since 2006, mainly seeing to patrols and guard duties.

Hungary Chad cooperation military choppers from France

New Airbus H225M military choppers arrived in Hungary on Tuesday. The new helicopters will be used by the Hungarian Defence Forces. Meanwhile, Chad decided to end military cooperation with France. As a result, French soldiers are to return home soon. However, the Chad-Hungary agreement about sending a contingent of Hungarian soldiers to the Sahel area country remains in effect. Thus, the Hungarian military may depart to the African country soon.

According to portfolio.hu, new Airbus H225M military choppers arrived in Hungary to be used by the Hungarian Defence Forces. The main area of use of this type is the transportation of soldiers, but it is also used as a search and rescue aircraft.

The Hungarian Defence Forces ordered two versions from the French company. One is equipped with missiles (70 mm Hydra missiles and Spike precision-guided surface-to-air missiles), while the other is not since the Hungarian Defence Forces would only like to use it for transport duties. Thanks to the two new choppers, the Airbus H225M fleet of the Hungarian military grew to 12. In 2025, Hungary will receive another four aircraft. Therefore, the fleet will become complete with 16 helicopters.

Chad sends home the French, welcomes Hungarian troops

It sounded odd at first when the Hungarian prime minister’s spokesperson announced that Chad’s president, Mahamat Idriss Deby, would travel to Hungary and meet with PM Orbán in Budapest in September. Before, Hungarian media wrote about a possible Hungarian military mission to the unstable Sahel Area country. They added that one of the brokers of the deal was PM Viktor Orbán’s only son, Gáspár Orbán, who travelled to Chad multiple times.

Based on the official statements, the two leaders talked about stopping illegal migration, fighting against international terrorism, and possibilities in mutual training and operations. Later, the Hungarian defence minister highlighted that Chad and Hungary signed an anti-terrorism cooperation. The two countries also signed a strategic partnership agreement.

We wrote before that in November, the Hungarian Parliament passed a law that allowed the Orbán cabinet to make decisions about sending troops abroad without needing approval from Parliament, even skipping public debate in certain cases.

200 Hungarian troops may replace 1,000 French soldiers

The Hungarian Parliament authorised the government to send 200 Hungarian troops to Chad last November. Then, news emerged about sending the contingent to the African country this spring, but nothing happened.

France24.com wrote that Chad was ending the military cooperation agreement with France. Despite hosting more than 1,000 French soldiers, they decided to send them home even though the document did not specify a date. Chad is the last foothold of France in the region. Before, President Deby relied on French military support e.g. against Boko Haram and other active militant groups. However, now he seeks closer ties with Moscow, and it seems Hungary is joining that group of countries.

Telex.hu wrote that the agreement about sending 200 Hungarian troops to Chad is still in effect; however, nobody knows when the contingent will be deployed to the African country. Experts could not tell what the reason for such a mission could be. VSquare acquired information that Gáspár Orbán, the prime minister’s only son, would have liked to create a Hungarian military intelligence centre in Chad.

Honoring History: Hungarian Soldiers of World Wars I and II Reburied in Budapest

Addressing a re-burial ceremony of WW1 and WW2 Hungarian soldiers at the Fiumei Street Cemetery on Tuesday, the defence minister said that “the homeland will never forget those who gave their life for it; their memory will live on forever not only in history books, but in our hearts as well.”

“The sacrifice of those heroes is eternal and timeless, it paves the way for survivors to live on, and to freedom,” Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

He noted that as a result of the dedicated work of experts one hundred soldiers had found “their new, deserved eternal place to rest, 85 of whom are here with us today on the last call for formation to receive from us their the last, due bid farewell”.

According to information provided by the defence ministry, experts of the Military History Institute and Museum has completed the exhumation of 1,234 fallen soldiers at 34 sites in 16 counties this year.

The remains of the 30 Soviet and 20 German soldiers exhumed have been turned over to the foreign partner organisations.

“Hungarian Iron Dome” deployed near the Ukrainian border, expert says Putin will attack Hungary

Hungarian Iron Dome NASAMS 3

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the Hungarian defence minister, wrote last week in a Facebook post that the Hungarian Defence Forces were closely monitoring the situation in Transcarpathia following last week’s Russian attacks and the heightened radar surveillance. Blikk wrote that the ‘Hungarian Iron Dome’ has been deployed near the Ukrainian border because even experts believe the war may reach Hungarian territories. The ministry did not share exactly where they placed the air defence system.

Orbán talked about the darkest days of the war

We wrote last week that media reports talked about two Russian missiles shot down close to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border over Pósaháza (Pavsino) and Feketepatak (Csornyij Potik). For example, almost 95% of the population of Feketepatak is Hungarian, located only 20 kilometres from the Hungarian-Ukrainian border.

The Hungarian defence minister said then that they were closely monitoring the situation. However, there is more happening in Northeastern Hungary, as the media reported before.

Hungarian media, especially the government-close outlets, regularly write about the possible escalation of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Following the deployment of North Korean troops in Ukraine, multiple Western powers allowed Ukraine to use their weapons against targets in Russia. The consequence was the Russian nuclear doctrine’s modification, followed by a similar change in the corresponding American document.

PM Orbán said in his morning interview that the possibility of escalation was never this high before, and we must wait until Trump’s inauguration in January to ease the conflict and introduce an armistice or peace.

However, it seems Hungary is preparing for the worst-case scenario. The Hungarian Defence Ministry did not want to comment or provide further details, but Blikk believes that the defence minister decided to deploy Hungary’s NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) air defence system in Northeast Hungary. Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that the advanced air defence systems allow Hungarian troops to increase their efficiency concerning detection accuracy and shorten reaction times.

The new NASAMS-3 system was inaugurated in Győr last October.

Spain, Lithuania and the USA also use this air defence system, which proved very effective against Russian attacks in Ukraine. The NASAMS-3 cannot shoot down ballistic missiles, but it is good against drones, missiles and air force. Depending on the rocket type it uses, its range spans 8-50 kilometres.

Furthermore, the system’s effectiveness can be increased by the ELM–2084 radars used by the Israeli Iron Dome.

Russia may attack Transcarpathia and even Hungarian regions

István Gyarmati, a Hungarian national security expert, said it was high time to deploy the Hungarian air defence system in Northern Hungary. Mr Gyarmati said the Hungarian Defence Forces must always prepare for the worst-case scenario, and currently, Hungary is threatened only by Ukraine.

He said he expected fights even in Transcarpathia, a region populated by a community of more than 100,000 indigenous Hungarians. It has happened only twice so far, as it was Ukraine’s westernmost region that fell victim to Russian attacks. Mr Gyarmati added that provided the war escalates, Russian missiles may even hit Hungarian territories.

Ukraine events in recent days show need for immediate peace, says FM Szijjártó

Events in Ukraine in recent days such as the strikes on Transcarpathia and the launch of long-range missiles confirm that an immediate peace settlement is needed because there is a severe risk of escalation, the foreign minister said on Thursday.

The ministry cited Péter Szijjártó saying during his tour of Hungary promoting the National Consultation survey that in Brussels his European Union counterparts appeared unnerved largely in view of Donald Trump’s election win and because they expected that Trump likely remembered all the things they said about him in the past eight years.

“There were very few of us in the room with a real smile on their faces, sitting relaxed during the discussion of the day’s agenda. What’s important is that we have always stood on the right side and we are still standing there,” he added.

“After the low points of political cooperation in the past four years, I believe there is good hope that Hungary-US political ties will return to where they used to be during Trump’s first presidency…” he said.

He cited the US decision to cancel an agreement on double taxation avoidance, and that Hungarian opposition parties and the media had been receiving US financial support in recent years, neither of which were “an expression of sincere friendship”.

“It was clear that if the results in America in early November had been different, then we would have been in a position where we must really pull up our socks. We still have to do that because there are two months left and it is easy to see that the Democrats in government and their liberal friends in Europe decided to make all possible moves to thwart the possibility of making peace in January,” he added.

“Now there is the need for wisdom, strategic calm and consideration on the part of the pro-peace camp, so that the hope that was so bright in the sky just a few days ago still survives on January 20,” he added.

He welcomed the fact that the “globalist, pro-war offer” had been defeated in the US by the “pro-peace, economically patriotic approach”. He said that the latter had become dirty words in Europe. “If someone is pro-peace, they immediately get branded. Being pro-peace has become equal to siding with Putin and being Lavrov-friendly,” he added.

Szijjártó said the West has delivered hundreds of millions of euros worth of weapons to Ukraine in recent years, but this had failed to bring about a turning point on the battlefield. He said the conflict could only be resolved through negotiations.

“What do further weapons deliveries lead to?” Szijjártó said. “To a protracted war, to more casualties, more suffering, more destruction and the danger of the war’s expansion.”

“Every development of the last few days, including the missile strike on Transcarpathia, the alleged launch of ballistic missiles and the launch of long-range missiles all underscore the need for immediate peace,” he said.

“An immediate ceasefire and immediate negotiations are needed because a single accident, a single bad decision, a miscalculation or a misunderstood communication is enough for the whole world to be engulfed in flames,” he warned.

“So it’s important to strengthen peace efforts in every way possible and to remain committed over the next two months in order to avoid any kind of trouble that could trigger irreversible developments,” Szijjártó said.

Meanwhile, he said the US presidential election had brought about “a completely new reality in geopolitics and the global economy”.

“It’s clear that people are getting fed up in Europe as well,” he said. “We’ve been living under the threat of migration for nine years now. Four years ago, the European Commission failed to manage Covid… And instead of having localised the war, the European Union — or at least quite a few EU and NATO member states — are practically taking steps to globalise the conflict.”

He said European leaders were “fully aware as to how big the problems are, but aren’t prepared to admit it, because that would raise the issue of holding them accountable”.

“The politicians of the European liberal mainstream don’t want to be confronted by this,” Szijjártó said, adding that it was “up to the people to do the work” in elections.

Hungarian minister: “Serbia must join the EU”

Hungarian minister Serbia must join the EU

Hungary has always supported the European Union’s enlargement and “now, as the president of the EU Council, it is again stating that after many years of waiting, Serbia must join the EU”, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in Belgrade on Wednesday, after meeting his Serbian counterpart.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky told a joint press conference with Bratislav Gašić that they had discussed the peace and security of the Western Balkans, and the war under way in the neighbourhood. Hungary’s position remains that an immediate ceasefire is needed, the only solution is through diplomacy, and peace talks should be started as soon as possible, he said.

He said that at a joint meeting of the Hungarian and Serbian governments last year, the respective defence ministries signed a strategic agreement, followed by concrete steps to bring the deal to fruition, as defence and security had always been important areas of cooperation between the two countries. He added that he and Gašić had discussed cooperation opportunities in defence, defence industry, and military, including military health. The frequent, high-level meetings between the two countries demonstrate that a golden age of Hungary-Serbia relations is under way, he said.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky told Hungary’s public media that Serbia and Hungary were strategic partners and Serbia’s stability was important for Hungary, “also in a military sense, the region should be reliable and calm”. The Western Balkans is the most arena of the Hungarian military force’s foreign presence, he said. “For years, we have been represented with significant force in NATO’s largest land mission dubbed KFOR, and also in EUFOR Althea, which is the pledge of EU and partly NATO presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It currently has a Hungarian commander,” he said.

Gašić also highlighted the importance of strategic cooperation between the two ministries.

New Gidran combat vehicles and Leopard tanks arrive in Hungary

Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky announced last week that the Tata armored brigade’s equipment fleet had been expanded with new high-tech combat vehicles, further enhancing Hungary’s security.

As part of the Defence and Force Development Programme, the soldiers of the 1st Armoured Brigade of the MH Klapka György received 15 new Gidran combat vehicles and two Leopard 2A7HU tanks.

Gidrans arrived

According to the ministry press release, the new multi-purpose modular armored fighting vehicles can be used as mobile fire control points, observation points, and battery and platoon command points, increasing the sub-unit’s maneuverability in executing the Hungarian Defence Forces’ domestic and international operational tasks. Based on the Turkish Ejder Yalçin combat vehicle, 48 of the 48 military vehicles, which we have renamed Gidrán after the Hungarian horse, are now available to the Hungarian Defence Forces.

New Leopard tanks have arrived

The equipment for the 11th Battalion of the Tarczay Ervin Charge Battalion is also being developed according to the plan. With the two new Leopard 2A7HU tanks, which arrived on Wednesday, the Hungarian Defence Forces already have 26 units.

The Minister said that, by 2028, forty-four pieces of high-tech military equipment would be delivered to Hungary to strengthen the armored combat vehicle corps.

According to the Defence Minister, the Hungarian Government remains committed to modernising the armed forces. This means that the 2025 defense budget will guarantee the security of the Hungarian people and the continuation of the Defence and Military Development Programme.

more and more young people enlist military

More and more young people are enlisting in the military, the defence minister said on Saturday.

This week, more than 200 new recruits reported for basic training in Tata and Várpalota, in the north, and in Kecskemét, in central Hungary, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in a ministry statement. He added that more and more reservists were choosing to become active-duty soldiers.

A recruitment campaign launched by the Hungarian Armed Forces in June continues to draw interest, the minister said, adding that more than 10 percent of the reservists recruited in the summer have moved to active duty. The armed forces recruited 2,600 new reservists during the four-month campaign, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said. He noted that 1,179 new recruits took their oaths at a ceremony last weekend at the campaign’s closing event.

Historic agreement between Hungary and Sweden concerning Gripen fighter jets – PHOTOS, UPDATED

An agreement has been reached with the Swedish defence minister on the joint development of the Gripen fighter jet, Defence Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky said on Wednesday.

“Today, we had talks with the Swedish defence minister in Stockholm, and we signed an agreement we could call historic: we will work together on developing the Gripens, and on many other important bilateral issues,” he said in a video on Facebook. “The Gripens that are coming from Sweden are an iconic multifunctional combat aircraft of the Hungarian Air Forces, a defining force of Hungarian defence,” the minister said.

“Swedish-Hungarian ties, especially since Sweden’s NATO accession, have been elevated to a strategic level,” he said.

Despite opposing views on issues such as the war in Ukraine, “we have conducted a valuable and honest discussion,” Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

In a Facebook post, the Hungarian defence minister called Hungary “the guardian of airspaces”. That is because Hungarian Gripen fighters protect the airspace of some neighbouring countries and the Baltic states.

UPDATE: Long-term and fruitful cooperation with Saab

As a committed member of NATO, Hungary has a prime interest in close strategic and defence cooperation with Saab, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said after signing a letter of intent with Saab chief executive Micael Johansson on building closer cooperation at the company’s factory in Linköping on Thursday.

The minister said Hungary as a Gripen user and R and D partner wanted “long-term and fruitful” cooperation with Saab, according to a ministry statement. “We’re delighted that Saab plans to establish an aviation industry development centre in Hungary and continue work done together with defence innovation research institute VIKI on developing virtual reality, AI and 3D technologies, focusing on printing and new materials.” Enhanced cooperation would intensify innovation opportunities for domestic SMEs and defence innovation companies, he added.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky said Hungary saw Saab as a key partner in efforts by the Hungarian armed forces to upgrade its technologies and capabilities. For almost two decades, Hungary has been using Gripens to police the airspace of Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. Also, it does so for the Baltic states every three years and will perform the task for a fourth time in 2025, he said, adding that its air policing made a big contribution to the security of the Hungarian people, NATO and the EU, a foreign ministry statement said. The minister is in Brussels later on Thursday representing Hungary’s interests at the NATO defence ministerial meeting, the statement added.

The Telegraph: Washington will store nuclear-capable jets in Hungary – will nuclear warheads come?

Nuclear warheads in Hungary Washington

Russian politicians and military leaders regularly threaten NATO with war. As a result, Washington decided to expand their military base in Kecskemét to accommodate nuclear-capable fighter jets. Will there be nuclear weapons stored in Hungary? It happened before during the Soviet occupation of our country, but can Hungary store nuclear warheads again for a great power?

Helló Magyar wrote about the secret nuclear weapons store in the Bakony Mountains in Hungary where the Soviet leadership placed atomic bombs in the 1960s. The so-called Little Moscow was like a separate Soviet state inside Hungary until the fall of communism. Even Hungarian officers were not allowed to enter. The Soviet crew there had their shops, stores, healthcare units, schools, daycare, etc.

The Soviet Union stored more than 100 nuclear warheads in Hungary

As a result, the base remained secret, and nobody knows even today how many nuclear warheads Moscow kept there. In addition, we do not know what types were stored in the Bakony Mountains. We only know that the Hungarian military did not have access to those weapons of mass destruction. In case of a world war, the Soviet Union would have used them.

In 1989-1990, the Soviet army smuggled out the nuclear weapons in secret. The last Soviet soldier left the country on 19 June 1991. Interestingly, the last Soviet officer leaving Hungary was a Ukrainian national, Lieutenant General Silov.

In 1997, Hungary joined NATO, and several NATO bases were created where, for example, the United States stores weapons, aircraft, etc. One of them is near Kecskemét, Central Hungary.

Will Washington send nuclear weapons to Hungary?

The Telegraph wrote that – due to the threats of Russia – they plan to expand their Kecskemét base and would like to store nuclear-capable jets. According to the British magazine, the immediate cause is that Washington believes Russia will be ready for war by the end of this decade. Therefore, America would like to enhance their deterrence forces in the area. According to 24.hu, Washington plans to place tactical fighters and strategic military transport planes in Kecskemét.

The Hungarian media outlet asked the Ministry of Defence whether they authorised the United States to place and store nuclear weapons in Hungary. The ministry’s answer was clear: no such bid came from Washington. They added that delivering, placing or storing nuclear weapons in Hungary is forbidden without the authorisation of the Hungarian government and the National Assembly. The Hungarian government has not issued such a permit and does not plan to do so.

PHOTOS: Spectacular military exercise began in Hungary, minister says aim is to strengthen EU defence capabilities – UPDATED

EU defence capabilities military exercise

Spectacular military exercise, “Brave Warrior 24” has started near Kőröshegy, a small Hungarian village south from Lake Balaton. The Hungarian defence minister said the military drill’s aim was to strengthen EU defence capabilities. It is also an opportunity for the Hungarian soldiers to show their skills and knowledge for their allies.

The Hungarian presidency of the European Council sees the development of defence capabilities as a priority, the chief of the Hungarian Armed Forces said in Kőröshegy, near Lake Balaton, at the Central Training Base of the Hungarian Armed Forces, after a military show in the framework of a meeting of the EU Military Committee (EUMC). In a Facebook post, Hungary’s defence minister, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, wrote that Hungary was creating a 21st-century army.

Gábor Böröndi told a press conference after the show that Hungary was a staunch supporter of strengthening Europe’s defence industry and crisis management capacity, so that the bloc can live up to the challenges of a changing security environment. The “dynamic presentation” concluding the Brave Warrior 2024 military exercise was attended by the chiefs of staff of the EU member states, as well as those of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania, and the military representative of North Macedonia. Besides Hungarian troops, Croatian, Romanian, Slovak and Slovenian units also participated in the exercise, Böröndi said.

Development of joint defence capabilities

It was a critically important step in the development of joint defence capabilities and future crisis management operations,” he said. The aim was to advance peace and stability, he said. Summarising the exercise, General Röbert Brieger, chairman of the EUMC, said the script was simulating the evacuation of EU citizens from a politically unstable third country. Besides the participating infantry and reconnaissance units of Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, experts from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece contributed to organising and leading the exercise, the general said. The joint commitment showed the possibilities in the EU’s armed forces, he added.

A common aim is to strengthen the European Union’s defence and crisis management capability which is particularly important because of the migration situation, the chief of the Hungarian armed forces said after a meeting of the European Union Military Committee’s (EUMC) chiefs of defence in Budapest on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Gábor Böröndi noted that the current three-day EUMC meeting organised as part of the Hungarian EU presidency’s programme was the second one held outside Brussels.

“Hungary is committed towards the European Union’s military operations and strives to further strengthen the EU’s military role, with a special focus on building up a common military force to tackle external threats,” he said. “Our common goal is to achieve that the EU should play a leading role in providing for its own security.”

He said that with their contributions the Western Balkan countries further strengthened Europe’s defence and peace.

Development of EU defence capabilities a priority

The EU’s EUFOR Althea peace-keeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the bloc’s largest land mission operating under Hungarian command, “illustrates well the military role Hungary has in the European Union,” Böröndi said. He also noted Hungary’s participation in the EU’s military mission in the North-West Indian Ocean (CMP NWIO).

General Robert Brieger, chairman of the EUMC, said that the strategic issues raised at Tuesday’s meeting included operations by the EU’s naval forces in the North-West Indian Ocean as well as the EU’s common rapid response units, support to Ukraine and the Western Balkan countries’ participation in the common defence and security policy.

He said the EU was “only one step away” from achieving full operational capability which will then allow the bloc to respond fast to various crisis situations.

The meeting’s participants discussed ways for the EU to help the training of the Ukrainian armed forces with the aim to strengthen its defence capabilities.

“Since the outbreak of the war, the EU has been providing enormous help to Ukraine in the form of financial support, training and supplying military equipment. We will continue this support in the framework of the new mission supporting Ukraine, because the stability of the region is crucial from the point of view of the continent’s peace besides Ukraine also in the Western Balkans.”

Answering a question, Böröndi said Hungary neither supported nor opposed the EU’s training mission in Ukraine, but added that Hungarian troops would not participate in it.

Hungarian defence minister: Strong defence industry key to peace, which is needed in Europe

defence ministry europe peace

There is a need for peace in Europe, and for this a strong defence industry is key, the defence minister told a conference in Budapest on Friday.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said Europe was facing new challenges even as its defence capabilities and defence industry capacities were ailing.

The European security system must be rebuilt and strengthened, he said at the conference organised at the Ludovika University of Public Service, adding that the EU could count on Hungary.

In the past decade, Hungary has leaned on international partnerships to rebuild its defence industry and improve its defence capabilities, he said.

Hungary’s efforts to strengthen its defence industry serve the whole of Europe, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

Hungary has brokered cooperations that resulted in plants such as Rheinmetall’s ammunition factory in central Hungary and vehicle manufacturing plant in Zalaegerszeg, in the south-west, the Airbus plant in Gyula, in south-east Hungary, turning out helicopter parts, and the weapon manufacturing part in Kiskunfélegyháza, in the south, he said.

Besides being committed to defence investments, the government is also focusing on personnel issues, including a programme to boost reservists, he said.

Hungarian Defence Forces contribute 12,000 soldiers, helicopters and volunteers to flood protection

hungarian army flood alert

Preparations for flood protection have reached “one hundred percent” across the entirety of Hungary, the interior minister said on Monday.

Sándor Pintér told a press conference that measures implemented so far will ensure that the water of the Danube river can be confined and kept between its barriers.

He said that for other rivers,

the measures may include temporarily opening reservoirs to protect residents, their property, and their land from flood water.

Protection operations are carried out with the participation of water management authorities, the armed forces, police, prison management and the national disaster management chief directorate, Pintér said, adding that municipalities and the ambulance services were also on alert.

Meanwhile, the prime minister has convened the operative body for flood protection, the minister said, adding that its work was coordinated by the national disaster management authority backed by national water management authority providing expertise.

The Hungarian army is also participating in flood protection with 12,000 people, equipment including helicopters and convicts who volunteer, he said.

Pintér asked municipalities to set up flood defence committees, adding that sandbags, vehicles and other equipment would be provided by the central operative body.

The flood situation will be evaluated early in the morning on the basis of overnight data every day and steps will be taken accordingly, he said.

As we wrote today, a third-degree, highest-level flood alert is in effect along all sections of the Danube in Budapest from Monday, details HERE.

Government supporting local councils in flood defence

The parliamentary state secretary of the interior ministry said on Monday that the state is providing local councils with professional, logistical, material, and financial assistance in their flood protection efforts.

The state is providing multiple forms of assistance to every locality defending against the flood, Bence Rétvári told a press conference. Each locality has been assigned an expert from the water management authority with extensive knowledge on flood protection who will help organise the defence work, he said.

He added that each locality has a liaison officer from the disaster management authority to ensure the supply of necessary materials, such as sandbags.

The state secretary said the force majeure fund will cover the localities’ flood protection costs.
