Hungary’s foreign minister severely condemns Ponta’s remarks – statement
Budapest, September 16 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto early on Wednesday severely condemned remarks made by Romania’s premier, Victor Ponta, who said “Hungarian policymakers are no better than the Syrians or Libyans whose [countries] migrants are fleeing.”
In a statement, Szijjarto said: “Yesterday, Victor Ponta lost his self-control, and with his unreasonable statements affronted the whole of Hungary. Civilised European politicians do not formulate such wild slander. His remarks … have only one explanation: he has completely lost his footing in Romanian domestic politics.”
Ponta had reacted on his Facebook page late on Tuesday to sharp diplomatic exchanges concerning Hungary’s plan to extend its border fence with Serbia along the border with Romania “for a reasonable distance”, saying that the move was redolent of Europe of the 1930s and 1940s.
