Hungarian government calls on Ukraine to observe European standards
Budapest, September 23 (MTI) – The State Secretariat for Hungarian Communities Abroad said it regrets the decision by the Central Election Commission of Ukraine to rearrange constituencies just before October’s local elections.
The state secretariat said the decision to rearrange the constituency of Berehove (Beregszász), where many residents are Hungarians, was a pointless one, adding that four new constituencies are not contiguous.
The state secretariat added that such a redrawing of the electoral map can significantly hamper the chances of candidates representing Transcarpathian Hungarians getting elected to the Transcarpathian County Council.
The secretariat called on Ukraine to observe European standards and respect the minorities’ right to assert their interests.
