Varga has been selected Finance Minister of the Year
Budapest, October 11 (MTI) – Critical remarks concerning Hungary’s economic policy have become scarce, with more and more people thinking that “the success of the Hungarian economy could become an example” for other countries to follow, Economy Minister Mihaly Varga told MTI on Sunday.
Varga has been selected Finance Minister of the Year in the central and eastern European region by financial periodical Euromoney.
Speaking on the sidelines of an annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, Varga said that the paper had considered the achievements of the whole country, its relatively high economic growth, the increase in investments and consumption, more efficient tax collection, reduced vulnerability from external factors as well as the country’s effective debt management.
“London analysts, whom we refer to ever so often, have this time acknowledged the achievements of the Hungarian economy in the past five and a half years,” Varga said.
Concerning the conference, Varga said that the meeting had been characterised by worries over signs of a slowing global economy. He stressed, however, that Hungary was one of the few countries whose growth prospects the IMF had revised up.
