Bishop of Budapest tells victim he does not care about molestation — VOICE RECORDING

The voice recording below is worth listening to, as there has not been an instance like this in Hungary before. In Poland, a documentary filmed by hidden cameras made a mess of the Church, and the country. A. admitted to getting the idea from it.

According to A. between ages 12 and 16, from 1999 to 2003, he was regularly molested by a young priest, who served next to Parson György Snell. Snell was a sort of father-figure to the boy who came from a troubled family. This can be heard on the recording, in which they reminisce about what happened two decades later, reports 444.

Between 2003 and 2013, the young man tried to get the case to be investigated by Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest or by Cardinal Péter Erdő or by the Ambassador of the Holy See. 13 years had to pass before the priest involved was banned from all activities in the Church.

The immediate prelude of the recording is that A. received a letter on May 20 from Bishop György Udvardy, who investigated his case in 2003, in which the bishop doubted A.’s claims, but admitted that there was no record made of their past meeting.

After this, A. went to György Snell, who was to one who had sent him to Udvardy in the first place. A. reveals to the bishop at some point of the chat that it is being recorded, which can be heard roughly in the middle of the recording. He asks why they did not take his side when he reported the harassment, noting that he was 16 years old at the time. He also asks why they did not press charges and try to investigate the case then. A. believes that, if they had done so, some later victims could have got away without the same harassment. He refers to them when he says they all attend Snell’s mass together.
